1. Open the Twitter app.
2. Tap Messages.
3. Tap the new message icon in the top right corner of the screen.
4. Choose a recipient by typing the person's name and then tapping the appropriate username.
5. Tap Next one.
6. Enter your message.
7. Tap To send.

Method 1 of 2: Send a private message (mobile)

1. Tap the Twitter app. Log in if you have not already done so and are prompted to do so. You can read here how to create a Twitter account.
2. Tap the envelope icon. This icon can be found in the top right corner of the screen.
3. Tap the icon for a new message. This is the icon with a speech cloud and a plus sign in the lower right corner of the screen.
4. Enter a username.
5. Tap the username. The name will appear in the text box.
6. Tap "Next".
7. Type your message in the text box. You can also add images, GIF animations and emoticons to your message by tapping the appropriate icon.
8. Tap "Send". The send button is located to the right of the text box and does not appear until text, a picture, an emoticon, or GIF animation has been entered in the text box.
   • Depending on the user settings, the recipient may or may not receive a notification that he or she has a new message.

Method 2 of 2: Send a private message from a browser

1. Go to www.twitter.com.
2. Log in to your Twitter account. If you are already logged in you will see your Twitter feed. If you don't have a Twitter account yet and want to create one, you can learn how to create a Twitter account here.
3. Click on "Messages". This option can be found in the top left corner between the "Notifications" option and the Twitter logo.
4. Click on "New Message".
5. Enter a username. Depending on the user settings, you may only be able to send messages to people who already follow you.
6. Press ↵ Enter.
7. Click on "Next". By clicking "Next" in the lower right corner of the window you will see the message box.
8. Type a message. The text box is located at the bottom of the window.
   • You can also add emoticons, GIF animations and photos by clicking the corresponding icons next to the text box.
9. Click "Send". This option is located in the lower right corner of the window and becomes clickable when you have typed a message or added an emoticon, GIF animation or photo.
   • Depending on the user settings, the recipient may or may not receive a notification that he or she has received a message.

Tips

• When you've sent a private message to someone and they messaged you, just click the dialog box below the other person's reply to have a private conversation with them.
• You can also send a private message from your profile page by clicking the envelope icon.

Warnings

• You cannot retrieve a sent private message.
• Sending messages to people you don't follow can be seen as spamming and they can unfollow or block you.
