There is nothing more frustrating than sleeping badly because your bed is squeaky. Fortunately, you don't have to spend a lot of money on a new frame to stop the beeping. By identifying the cause of the squeak and tightening and lubricating the joints that hold the frame of your bed together, you can stop the squeaking noise and sleep peacefully again.

To step

Part 1 of 3: Diagnosing the cause

  1. Remove the mattress and box spring from the bed frame. The box spring is the wooden part under the mattress. Place the mattress and box spring on the floor.
  2. See if the mattress is causing the squeaking noise. Before you start checking the bed frame, see if the mattress is the cause. Lie on the mattress and move back and forth. If the mattress squeaks you know that is the cause.
  3. See if the box spring is causing the squeaking sound. Apply pressure to the top of the box spring and move it. If you hear it squeak, the squeak is probably caused by the box spring instead of the bed frame.
  4. Wiggle the legs of the bed frame back and forth and listen carefully. The area where the legs attach to the rest of the bed frame may squeak, so try to wiggle all the legs. Try to pinpoint the exact spot causing the squeaking sound.
  5. Wiggle the slats at the bottom of the bed frame. These are the metal or wooden planks that extend from one side of the bed frame to the other. The slats support the mattress and box spring. Apply pressure to the slats to see if they cause the squeak.
    • When two pieces of wood rub together, you often hear it squeaking.

Part 2 of 3: Stop the beeping sound

  1. Get the correct tools for the part of the bed frame you are working on. Notice how the bed frame parts are joined together where the bed squeaks. If it is a screw, get a screwdriver of the correct size. If it is a bolt then you need a wrench.
  2. Tighten the beeping connection. Sometimes the squeaking noise is just caused by a loose connection. Before disassembling the bed frame, try to tighten all the screws and bolts where the squeaking sound is coming from. When you can no longer turn them, you have tightened them tight enough.
  3. If you are unable to tighten a bolt, use a washer. If you can't tighten a bolt all the way against the frame, place a washer between the frame and the bolt to fill up the extra space.
  4. If the bed frame continues to squeak, disconnect and take it apart. Use your tools to loosen and remove the bolts and screws that connect. Put all loose bolts and screws in a plastic bag so you don't lose them. Separate the two pieces of the bed frame that make up the connection.
  5. Lubricate all parts of the connection. Apply lubricant to all surfaces where both parts of the joint touch, including all fasteners, brackets, and flat surfaces. Some good lubricants to try are:
    • Paraffin. Paraffin is a waxy substance that is sold in blocks for easy rubbing on surfaces.
    • WD-40.WD-40 is a spray lubricant that works well on metal bed frames, but eventually dries out.
    • Candle wax. If you can't go to the store to buy a lubricant and don't have any lubricant at home, you can try using candle wax. Rub the wax on the surfaces just as you would with other waxy lubricants.
    • Acid-free grease or a lubricant with silicone. Buy an acid-free grease or a lubricant with silicone from a hardware store and apply it to different parts of the joint to stop the squeaking.
  6. Reassemble the bed frame. Replace all screws and bolts that you loosened earlier and tighten them well with your tools. Make sure to tighten them all the way so you don't accidentally squeak the bed again.
  7. Listen to see if the bed still squeaks. Shake the bed back and forth and see if you can hear it squeak. If the bed frame is still squeaking, try to find out where the noise is coming from. If the beeping sound is caused by another connection, follow the same steps as for the first connection. If the same connection still beeps, try tightening the bolts or screws a little more.

Part 3 of 3: Try a quick fix

  1. Put old clothes on the slats of the bed frame. Use old socks and shirts that you no longer wear. Due to the fabric, the box spring and the mattress will no longer be able to rub against the bed frame and cause a squeaking noise.
  2. If you have a wooden bed frame, use cork to fill in the gaps. Check the bed frame for gaps where the mattress and box spring could potentially slide and rub against the frame. Tuck cork into the openings so that all parts of the bed are secure and stay in place.
  3. Tuck a towel under uneven legs. A leg is uneven if it does not touch the ground. Put a towel between the leg and the floor so that the bed frame does not wobble and make no noise.
  4. Place a book under the mattress near the squeaky area. If the squeaking noise is caused by one of the slats, remove the mattress and box spring from the bed and place a book on the squeaky slat. Then put the mattress and box spring back on the bed frame.

Tips

  • If one of the joints has a gap causing the squeaking sound, apply a strip of felt between the two surfaces that come together to form the joint to fill the empty space.
