It is possible to iron a shirt faster and better if you follow the following step-by-step instructions. With a little practice, it will look like your shirts come straight from the dry cleaner.

To step

Method 1 of 3: The perfect preparation

  1. Start with a good, clean iron. A cheap iron is more likely to cause problems, clog or scorch your clothes.
  2. Adjust the height of your ironing board at the height of your waist. Make sure the floor under the ironing board is clean.
    • If you don't have an ironing board, you can also put clean bath towels on the table.
  3. Provide a place to hang your garment. If you are ironing multiple shirts or items of clothing, provide hangers and a place to hang your shirt while the other items are being ironed. A chair that is close by or a door handle will work fine.
  4. Grab a towel or two. You need these to iron the sleeves. It's not absolutely necessary, but it makes it a lot easier.

Method 2 of 3: Iron the sleeves

  1. Read the label. Read the composition of the fabric and the washing, drying and ironing instructions and set your iron to this, just to be a little colder. With a cotton / polyester mix you use the temperature suitable for polyester.
    • If the label doesn't say you can't use steam, use steam. It makes ironing much easier.
  2. Place the sleeve on the ironing board. Let the rest of the shirt hang to the side and spread the sleeve out on the ironing board. The cuff is on the narrow side of the shelf. Lay the sleeve as flat as possible with the buttons of the cuff down and smooth it out with your hands.
  3. Be careful around the knots. Ironing around the buttons on the front of the shirt can be difficult. Only use the tip of the iron to iron between the buttons and do not iron over the buttons.
    • It may be easier to iron this piece on the wrong side first.

Tips

  • Aerosol starch is cheap and gives your shirts a professional look.
  • Immediately after you're done, hang the shirt on a coat hanger and button the top button.
  • Always place the iron on its back or in the holder.

Warnings

  • Unplug the iron when you're done!
  • Keep cords away from small children, they can pull the (hot) iron on top of them.
