Have you ever wanted to send a letter to someone with maybe a small gift or a hidden message? Of course it is best if you have something nice to put your letter in. To make the gift more personal, you can make an origami envelope. Not only is such an envelope easy to make, but you can show off your creative side with this handy design.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Make a gift envelope

  1. Write the address on the back if you plan to ship the envelope.

Tips

  • Use larger sheets of paper to make larger envelopes. To make larger envelopes, you can use wrapping paper or any type of paper, as long as the paper is easy to fold. If the sheet of paper is not square in shape, you may need to make it into a square.
  • You can also use a ruler when folding the flap in Step 4. Measure the length of the paper at the longest fold. Make three equal parts with or without a pencil and fold the paper. You may need to do some math to fold the paper correctly.
  • With sharp folds, the envelope looks neater and stays put together better. To make a sharp crease, hold your fingernails together and run them across the crease.
  • Get a sheet of paper that has a different color on the front than the back. Larger envelopes are great for home-made cards.
  • If you don't have real origami paper in the house, you can make your own by painting one side of a square sheet of paper.
  • Use a weatherstrip tool to make very sharp folds.

Necessities

  • 1 square sheet of paper. The envelope will be about half the width of the original square and three times shorter.
  • Ruler (optional)
  • Sheet of printer paper of any color (method 2)
