What happens if you really, really really want a mocha-flavored coffee, but really, really, really really want to stay at home in your pajamas? Then you just make one yourself, right? Whether you're drinking regular filter coffee or a real espresso, you can make that delicious specialty coffee at home even faster than you can put on a decent pair of pants and get one. So put your wallet away and start with the first step below.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Using freshly brewed coffee

  1. Gather your ingredients. This is what you need to make a mocha coffee drink using freshly brewed coffee:
    • 240 ml freshly brewed coffee (or instant coffee)
    • 120 ml of milk
    • 1 teaspoon (15 g) of cocoa powder
    • 1 teaspoon (15 g) of warm water
    • Sugar (optional)
    • Whipped cream and cocoa (optional, to garnish)
  2. Make as much coffee as you want. To make it as authentic as possible, it is best to use extra strong, dark roast coffee. You can also use instant coffee if you are in a hurry, but filter coffee tastes much better.
    • The coffee will be twice as strong if you add about 4 teaspoons (60 g) of coffee powder to 175 ml of water.
  3. Make a chocolate syrup with warm water and sweetened cocoa powder, just like in a cafe. Combine equal parts of both and stir together in a small bowl. You need about 2 teaspoons (30 g) for one mocha drink.
  4. Add the coffee and chocolate syrup together in your mug. The more coffee you use, the more chocolate syrup you will likely need. But do leave some room for the milk!
  5. Froth a little milk or heat it on the stove or in the microwave. How much? Well, how big is your mug? 90 to 120 ml is usually more than enough.
    • The milk must be between 60 and 70 ° C. If you make it even hotter, the milk will burn and it will lose its flavor.
  6. Fill your mug with the heated milk. If there is foam, set it aside with a spoon so that it comes on top of the mocha last.
    • If you like very sweet mocha, add a teaspoon of sugar to your drink before pouring the foam on top.
  7. Add a dollop of whipped cream, sprinkle some cocoa powder on it and enjoy! Chocolate or caramel syrup or even cinnamon or cane sugar is also a delicious addition.

Method 2 of 2: Using espresso

  1. Gather your ingredients. This is what you need to make a mocha coffee drink with espresso:
    • Espresso coffee (standard or decaffeinated)
    • 2 teaspoons (30 g) of hot water
    • 1 teaspoon (15 g) of unsweetened cocoa powder
    • 1 teaspoon (15 g) of sugar
    • A pinch of salt
    • 120 ml milk (any kind)
    • 1 teaspoon of flavored syrup (optional)
  2. Put the hot water, cocoa powder, sugar and salt directly into your mug. This allows you to create the classic chocolate flavor that you have in your favorite coffee. This is much more satisfying than simply pouring some ready-to-drink syrup into your coffee. That's for kids.
  3. Brew espresso coffee. You need enough to fill about half of your mug. If you don't want that much caffeine, you can cut back on coffee beans or combine it with decaffeinated espresso.
  4. Froth 120 ml of milk. If you have a milk frother, of course. If you don't have one, you can also pour the milk directly into your espresso and heat it in the microwave or heat the milk on the stove to 70 ° C. But if you have an espresso machine, you probably have a milk frother too!
    • The end of the frother should not reach the bottom or the top of the milk too far. You don't want too much bubbles or air, but you also don't want burnt, too hot milk. It should take about 15 seconds. If you have a thermometer, stop around 70 ° C.
    • Is your mug the same size as the one in Friends' Central Perk? Then you need 160 ml sooner.
  5. Add the frothed milk to your chocolate syrup. Hold a large spoon against the edge so that you can stop the froth of the milk. That should be on top after the milk and chocolate have been mixed.
    • Once all the milk is in your mug, scoop the foam neatly on top. This is the proverbial icing on the cake.
  6. Add your espresso. Bam! Mocha made. If you happen to have a nice syrup that you want to add (maybe caramel or raspberry), add it now.
  7. Garnish with whipped cream and a pinch of cocoa. You don't want it just to taste good, you want it to look good looks like. You can also garnish with caramel, cinnamon, or jaggery. Or how about using just colored sprinkles and a cherry. Now all you have to do is drink it!

Tips

  • If you added whipped cream, try adding chocolate syrup to make it look more like a coffee cafe mocha coffee, with some of that dripped chocolate.
  • If you prefer the cold variety, simply add ice to the coffee and blend it in a blender.

Warnings

  • Make sure you don't heat more than necessary. The drink will lose its flavor or you could burn!
  • Be careful and don't get burned.
  • Experiment with different sweeteners to find the one you like best. Be aware of the health dangers of the different sweeteners, both with sugar and artificial sweeteners.

Necessities

  • A coffee maker, espresso machine or hot water for instant coffee
  • Cup or mug
  • Spoon
