With a magic table, you can imbue things with special abilities, from infinite durability to repressive attacks. Making the table requires some rare ingredients, so get ready for an expedition.

To step

Part 1 of 3: Collecting material

  1. Mine for diamonds. Diamond is one of the rarest ores, which can only be found deep underground. For best results, look for this light blue rock in layers 5–12. Dig down until you encounter bedrock (an unbreakable gray block), then count 5-12 blocks up. Chop the diamonds with an iron or gold pickaxe.
    • Remember never to dig straight down. A "cascading" mine keeps you safe from shafts and lava.
    • You need two diamonds to make a magic table. You also need a diamond pickaxe for obsidian mining (of which you need 4 for the magic table), which requires an additional 3 diamonds.
    • Do not go beyond layers 11 and 12 to avoid most of the lava.
  2. Make obsidian. Obsidian is a deep black block that only appears when running water and lava are brought together. You can create this yourself by making 3 buckets from 3 iron bars. Scoop lava with a bucket and pour it into a shaft of 4 blocks. Pour the water from an elevation so that it flows into the lava. The lava should now become obsidian.
  3. Cut out obsidian four times with a diamond pickaxe. Obsidian blocks will only drop tools when you use a diamond pickaxe.
  4. Find or create a book. You can break bookshelves in the library of a village or fortress to get ready-to-use books. Another option is to make them yourself:
    • Kill enough cows or horses to get at least 1 leather.
    • Cut off three stalks of sugar cane.
    • Make paper from the three sugarcane plants. Place the reeds in one row. Because cane is difficult to find, it is better to start a sugar cane plantation.
    • Combine 1x leather and 3x paper to make a book. Place them randomly in the work grid, with the paper in separate compartments.

Part 2 of 3: Creating and placing the magic table

  1. Create a magical table. Choose the Magic Table recipe, or combine the items as follows in the Advanced Workbench for PC:
    • Top row: blank, book, blank
    • Middle row: diamond, obsidian, diamond
    • Bottom row: obsidian, obsidian, obsidian
  2. Place the magic table. Place the magic table somewhere with at least two blocks of space on either side, in a room that is at least two blocks high. This will give you plenty of room to enhance the magic table with bookshelves as detailed below.
  3. Make bookshelves (optional). Bookshelves near a magic table enable more powerful spells with your magic table. You make a bookshelf by placing three books in the middle row, then filling the rest of the grid with shelves.
    • These more powerful spells will cost you more experience. You may want to skip this step if you are still at a low level.
  4. Place the bookshelves. For the best enchantments you need 15 bookshelves. Each should be placed like this:
    • On the same level as the table, or right above it.
    • Keep exactly one block between the table and the bookcase. Even flares or snow will stop the effect.

Part 3 of 3: Enchanting objects

  1. Place the enchanting item next to your magic table. Use the magic table to open the enchantment interface. You can place armor, swords, bows, books and most tools in the magic table. These go in the left box (in the PC version) or in the top box (Pocket Edition).
    • Books store enchantments for later use with an anvil. Enchanting tools is more efficient.
  2. Place lapis lazuli in the other box. In the latest versions of Minecraft, each spell consumes 1, 2 or 3 lapis lazuli. Place the gem in the empty space in your table.
  3. Select one of the three enchantments. Hovering over an option will show you the name of an enchantment. There is also a chance to add additional randomly selected enchantments.
    • You cannot restore the available selection without enchanting something. Blocking a path to a bookcase will reveal a new option (usually lower level).
    • Different types of items have different enchantments available.
  4. Understand what it costs. There are three different options for the magic table. The top one is the weakest and costs one lapis lazuli and one experience point. The middle one costs two lapis lazuli and two points. The bottom one costs three of each.
    • The number next to each option is the level of the spell. You must have at least that level to be able to choose that option. The number of experience points it costs is not changed.

Tips

  • Certain tools cannot be enchanted with the table, including flint, steel, and scissors. You can enchant some of these objects with a book, then you combine the enchanted book with the tools on an anvil.
  • If the recipe or spell does not work as expected, update Minecraft to the latest version. Minecraft Pocket Edition introduced magic tables in version 0.12.1. The PC version has undergone many changes in terms of enchantments.
