Nicknames come from friends, family or teammates. Throughout history, people have used nicknames for a variety of reasons. Including: to describe someone, bring happiness, as a sign of friendship, or someone's birthplace. Whatever the origin of a nickname, it can be tricky to come up with a cool nickname. Be careful when coming up with a nickname for yourself or a friend - you may be stuck with it for the rest of your life.

Method 1 of 3: Come up with a cool nickname

1. Shorten your name. The most standard and common type of nickname is a shortened version of someone's real name. For example, Alexander can be shortened to Alex or Al, Katherine to Kate or Katie, Richard to Rick or Dick, and so on.
2. Make a cool nickname from your initials. Take and combine the first letter of your first and last name, or the first letter of your first and second name. Using your initials as a nickname can help you distinguish yourself from other people if you have a common name, or can make difficult or long names easier to pronounce. This works well if your second or last name starts with 'J', 'D', or 'T' - For example, Daniel Joseph can be shortened to 'D.J', Andrew Johnson to 'AJ' Jonathon Jameson to 'JJ, or James Taylor to 'JT'.
3. Describe a unique physical trait or personality trait. Think of a good quality about yourself or a friend and use it as inspiration for a nickname. For example, the 16th President of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, is often referred to as "Honest Abe" for his integrity. Be careful not to offend anyone and focus on positive, rather than negative, traits.
   • If someone is very smart, name them "Prof" or "Doc", and a creative person can be called "Muse" or "Da Vinci".

   • Look for inspiration in old TV shows or movies. Nicknames for characters from "The Little Rascals" (1922-1944) include Alfalfa, Junior, Froggy, Pineapple and Buckwheat. The popular musical and movie "Grease" (1978) was about members of the "Pink Ladies" (Rizzo, Frenchy and Marty) and the "T-Birds" (Doody and Kenickie).
2. Create a nickname based on your hometown or interests. Find inspiration where you come from or what you do. For example, people from Alkmaar are often referred to as "Kaaskop", and "Tukker" is a nickname for people from Twente. If you like cooking you can call yourself 'Chef', if you like cars you can use 'Mustang' (or any other type of car, this is just an example), and if you like reading (or owls) you can you use 'Owl'.
   • Use sports references. Think of a nickname associated with your favorite player. If you play a sport, come up with cool nicknames for everyone on the team based on their strengths. See if the names stick.
3. Think of a unique nickname based on your own name. You can also think of a unique or unusual way to nickname someone's name, such as "Resa" for "Theresa", "Elle" for "Michelle" or "Waiter" for "Robert". Also consider saying someone's name backwards, such as calling Katie "Eitak" or Brian "Nairb". Finally, you can call someone by their middle name.
   • Celebrities such as Katy Perry, Demi Moore and Reese Witherspoon use their middle name or their mother's maiden name.
4. Think of a stage name. If you are or want to become a musician, it is important to have a memorable nickname. Having a stage name is important if you want to protect your identity or if your name is difficult to pronounce. Unlike other types of nicknames, a stage name is your specific brand.
   • A good stage name is short, easy to pronounce and indicates who you are.
   • Be inspired by famous stage names. Look up your favorite musician and see how they chose their stage name.

Method 3 of 3: Come up with a nickname for a loved one

1. Use a pet name. Pet names are ways to show your affection. Popular pet names for women include handsome, sweetheart, sweetheart, angel, and princess. The best pet names for men are: honey, sweetheart, babe, bear, and hottie.
2. Use a nickname from your childhood. While childhood nicknames can be embarrassing, especially the ones your parents gave you, they can also be cute and endearing if you have a boyfriend or girlfriend. Ask your loved one's parents if they had a nickname for them when they were young. Use it the next time you see your boyfriend or girlfriend and see how they react.

• Make sure you answer your nickname, if you don't remember your nickname is "Boss" then you may not really need one.
• Try to make it unique. Names like "Ace", "Chef", and "Boss" are easy to remember, but not original.
• Do not try to use a name from an online game. The "Dungeon Master" sounds great, but people won't understand.
• Seek inspiration for creative nicknames in movies, songs, and TV series. However, don't make it so general that people don't understand the reference.
• Remember that many nicknames are not created on purpose, but happen "in the moment". By a funny story or insider joke after the nickname, it will be more unique and memorable.
• If you nickname someone, make sure it matches their personality.
