Just as much fun as the samba. Just as enchanting as Copacabana. Better than Brazilian football. Caipirinha is by far the most famous Brazilian drink. It's tasty and refreshing and, as you'll see, it's really easy to make.

Ingredients

  • Lime
  • White sugar (3 tablespoons)
  • Ice
  • Brazilian Cachaça (ka-sja-sa). Authentic caipirinha is made with just cachaça, but you can substitute it for rum or vodka if you can't get it.

To step

  1. Cut the lime into eight parts (no slices) and remove the white part in the middle (to avoid bitterness).
  2. Crush the lime on top of the sugar.
  3. Fill the glasses with ice cubes.
  4. Pour cachaça over it.
  5. Stir.
  6. Serve with a straw.

Tips

  • Use super fine sugar to make the sugar absorption easier.
  • The perfect caipirinha is well balanced in terms of sugar, lime and cachaça. Make sure none of the flavors overpower.
  • Always use white, clear cachaça. Don't use the golden brown kind, that's never done in Brazil.
  • In Brazil, caipirinha is often enjoyed with barbecues, so make sure to have caipirinhas at your next barbecue party!
  • You can use the back of a spoon if you don't have a good pestle.
  • Brazilian people sometimes call a lime a lemon.
  • Experiment with fruits other than lime. Strawberries, watermelon, or kiwi are spectacular options.

Warnings

  • Do not drink alcohol if you are under 18.
  • Caipirinha with lemon is not very tasty, so don't accidentally take it in place of lime.
  • Remember that cachaça contains a lot of alcohol. So drink in moderation!
