Most students hate it, but writing a book report doesn't have to be boring or difficult. In fact, it's a lot of fun, as long as you approach it in the right way. Here are some simple directions on how to write a concise and informative summary.

To step

Method 1 of 2: Read the Book

  1. Read the book. You can of course read an excerpt, but just a summary will not give you a good impression of the text.
  2. Take notes. While you read, take notes or use a voice recorder. Make general comments as you read. Note the tone and setting of the book, the characters and their personalities.
    • For example, if you have the book Game of Thrones you might notice that the world as described is very grim.
    • For example, you could describe the characteristics of Ned and his family - and those of all other families; the relationship between Cersei and Jaime; or Tyrion's physical build and posture compared to his personality.
    • The notes don't need to be written down in a particular format or look neat - they could be scribbles on a beer mat, if that works for you - as long as you understand them and it helps to remember small details that make the summary gets better.
  3. Immerse yourself in the story. If you are reading and you find yourself completely immersed in the story, keep reading! When you're done reading, finish the rest of the notes on what you've discovered. While not as specific as writing down notes directly, you can get a broader view of the story this way.
    • What made you get drawn into the story? Sometimes it takes some time to get into the story and the atmosphere as the writer has put it. Try to understand what it was that made you forget all about time.

Method 2 of 2: Writing the Summary

  1. Collect your notes. Make a chronology of your notes on the story. If you've made voice recordings, make sure to transcribe them and add them to your collection.
  2. Describe the plot. Make a general synopsis of the story's characters, decor, and theme.
    • Try to keep it global, while broadly describing the story. The purpose of the outline is to provide a framework for the final summary.
  3. Make use of your notes. Make good running sentences from your notes and use them in the excerpt. Be sure to use only the relevant information and include it properly and in the correct order in your summary.
  4. Provide detailed descriptions. Analyze important events in the story and leave out unnecessary and irrelevant information for the book report.
    • Know your audience. Make important points in your summary clear and straightforward.
  5. Conclude your book report with a conclusion or conclusion. At the end of the summary, add a closing word in which you briefly summarize all points that have been passed, together with a conclusion.
  6. Complete the summary. This includes editing and revising your text where necessary. Have someone familiar with the book proofread your summary and comment as needed.

Tips

  • Read excerpts from other books. Doing this will give you a better understanding of the structure of a summary.
  • Check the spelling.
  • View previous book reports you have made.

Warnings

  • Remember not to copy texts from others. Plagiarism can have serious consequences, depending on your objective. To prevent this, it is wise to be well aware of the rules regarding quotations. Otherwise, ask your teacher how you can best do this.
