If you are in high school, you will need to cover your textbooks to avoid damaging them. With a book cover, you can also restore books that have a bad cover or look disheveled. Covering your book will also make it look nicer. Whatever the reason for the book cover, there are quite a few options if you want to make a book cover. You can choose the type and style that you like best. From paper to felt, you have a ton of options if you want to make a book cover.

Method 1 of 4: Make a book cover from brown paper

1. Grab some brown paper, butcher paper, or a brown paper bag. You can make a good book cover from all these types of paper.
   • You can leave this type of book cover as it is, or decorate it with stamps, paint and decoupage techniques. You can also use other papers for wrapping, papers with copied images, and other papers that you think are strong enough to serve as a book cover.
2. Choose plastic wrap. Plastic wrap is probably the most common type of book cover used. You can use transparent or colored self-adhesive plastic film. You can also use other types of plastic film that do not have a self-adhesive layer but are suitable for book covers.
   • Both types of plastic protect your book, but foil without an adhesive layer will damage your book less in the long term. If you ever want to remove the cover from your book, plastic without an adhesive backing is easier to remove. You can also choose to use insert sleeves for your book cover.
   • The chemicals in the adhesive layer can eventually damage the book. Using adhesive plastic to cover your book is also not environmentally friendly because there is no adhesive plastic that can be recycled.
   • A plain plastic book cover takes a little more effort, but can easily be removed from around the book. You can also cover your book with cling film.
   • Adhesive plastic for books is sold in rolls. You can usually buy this plastic at any store that sells office supplies and craft supplies. Most rolls have sizes or a grid on the back of the sticky plastic, so you can stick the plastic right onto the book.
3. Get fabric for your cover. Use a piece of fabric left over from another sewing project. You can also go to the store to buy fabric that you like very much.
   • Whatever you choose, making a book cover out of fabric is a great way to keep the book in good condition. Fabric can also provide a personal touch to make your book unique and special.
4. Choose fabric. The fabric needs to be moderately thick to protect the book, so don't use fabric that is too thin.
   • Also buy some fusible web. Fusible webbing is used to make fabric less flexible and stiffer. Stick Vlieseline on the wrong side or the bottom of the fabric to make it firmer.
5. Use a colorful piece of felt to make a book cover. Felt is a strong and durable fabric to use for a book cover. It is suitable as a material for children's books or for writing pads that are often carried in a bag.
   • If possible, use wool felt instead of synthetic felt as wool felt is easier to work with. Wool felt, however, is more expensive.
6. Slide your book into the flaps. Close the book to make sure the felt is tight around the book. Your book should now be well protected.

Tips

• You can make pockets in your book cover if you wish. This works especially well if you are making a book cover from fabric or felt. You can then put a pen, eraser and bookmark in the pockets.
• If you're using plain white paper, think about printing, decorating, or coloring the paper before making your book cover.
• You can embroider fabric before making a book cover. You can embroider a favorite logo, an animal, a plant, a name or anything else you like on the fabric. You have to place the book exactly in the middle of the fabric so that the embroidery is in the right place. Embroider the fabric after measuring and cutting, but before sewing on the flaps. If you are using stabilizer, embroider the fabric before you stick the stabilizer down.
