Wearing a swim cap has several benefits, such as protecting your hair from the highly chlorinated pool water, keeping your hair out of your face while you swim, and reducing water resistance. From the pool owner's point of view, it also helps to keep your hair out of the pool filters. Swim caps are simple in design, but they can be quite tricky to pull on your head. With a few simple tips, you can put on your swimming cap quickly and painlessly.

To step

Method 1 of 3: Put on a shower cap without help

  1. Tie your hair back. If you have long hair, use a hair tie to tie your hair into a ponytail or bun (depending on the length of your hair). Make sure your hair is secure so it doesn't come loose.
    • The swim cap can force your hair to shift and pull your hair down, so you can tie your hair a little higher than you would expect it to be shifted in the swim cap.
  2. Wet your hair with water from the bathroom or locker room. Dip your head in the water in a sink or let your hair get wet in the shower for a few seconds. Wetting your hair will make it easier for the cap material to slide over your hair. Swimming caps have a tendency to stick and pull on dry hair.
    • Consider coating your hair with a thin layer of conditioner. This makes it a lot easier to pull the swimming cap over your hair.
  3. Open the bathing cap. Open the swim cap and consider wetting the inside of it. It is not necessary to wet the inside of the cap, but some people have found that wetting the inside of a swim cap makes it easier to put on. Hold the sides of the swim cap with your two hands.
    • Wetting the cap can also make it more difficult to put on - it depends on the type of cap you have.
  4. Put the bathing cap on your head. Tilt your head down and place the front of the bathing cap on your forehead between your hairline and eyebrows. Let the cap grab onto your forehead and use your hands to pull the cap down and back to cover the rest of your head.
  5. Arrange the bathing cap. Once the cap is on your head, you can make any necessary adjustments. Tuck stray hair into the cap, position the front of the cap so that it covers your hairline but does not hang over your eyebrows. Then pull the bathing cap over your ears. Pull on the back of the swim cap to make sure it is as snug as possible and put on your goggles.
    • The bathing cap around your ears is mainly personal preference. Some people like to cover their ears completely with the swimming cap, especially when they are competitive swimming. Others like to cover half of their ears, while some don't cover their ears at all.

Method 2 of 3: Put on a shower cap with help

  1. Put your hair back. If you have longer hair, use a hair tie to pull your hair back and secure it in a ponytail or bun. The bathing cap can move your hair, so make sure your hair is tied up tight and high.
  2. Wet your hair. Dip your head in the pool or let it get wet in a shower before putting on your swimming cap. Since the material of the cap tends to stick to and pull on dry hair, getting your hair wet can make it easier to put on the cap (although this will depend on the material of the cap).
  3. Put on the bathing cap. Ask a friend to help you put on your swimming cap. Open the swimming cap with your hands and tilt your head down. Hold the front of the cap firmly by your forehead while your friend stretches the back of the cap over your head.
  4. Arrange the bathing cap as needed. Once the swim cap is on your head, make the necessary adjustments. Pull the cap further down, adjust its position on your forehead and tuck in loose hair under the cap.
    • Remember that you can place the bathing cap around your ears in the way that is most comfortable for you. You can tuck your ears in, leave your ears uncovered, or cover only part of your ears.

Method 3 of 3: Drop a shower cap on your head with help

  1. Tie your hair back. If you have longer hair, use a hair tie to tie your hair back into a ponytail or bun. Make sure your hair is secure as it can shift when putting on the swim cap.
  2. Fill the bathing cap with water. Have a friend turn the cap inside out and fill it with water. You can get water from the pool or fill it up from another water source.
    • Your helper then holds the swim cap by the sides, with the water in the cap.
  3. Drop the bathing cap. Sit on the floor and let your help stand above you with the swim cap directly above your head. Your helper can hold the cap close to her face or even higher for extra height. The bathing cap should be released evenly so that it falls straight on your head.
    • The speed of the swimming cap causes it to fall on your head (due to the weight of the water) and therefore wrap it around your head.
    • Keep in mind that this method doesn't always work on the first try, and the results can be quite inconsistent. Usually adjustments are needed.
  4. Arrange the bathing cap as desired. Adjust the bathing cap if necessary. Pull the swimming cap over your head, tuck stray hair underneath and place the swimming cap around your ears.

Tips

  • Put some baby powder or other talcum powder in the bathing cap and shake out any excess powder. If you don't have baby powder, water or baking soda will work just as well.

Warnings

  • Never place your fingernails directly on the cap material. Otherwise you can poke a hole in the swimming cap.
  • Latex bathing caps are not as durable as silicone ones. Experiment with different bathing caps to find the one that works best for you.
  • Some bathing caps contain latex, which can cause allergic reactions. Make sure you find out if you have any allergies to latex, and if you have any, always check the material of the swim cap you are putting on.
  • If there is a tear or hole in the swimming cap, no matter how small, stop using it; the next time you put on the swimming cap it will definitely break.
