Sending a parcel to a company or a person can be quite complicated, especially if you've never sent a parcel before. But as long as you know what and where to write, you will get the package in the right place. Take time to study the different elements of your delivery and shipping address so that you can write them down accurately and correctly. Check your parcel for errors if you have written down the address so that they do not delay delivery.

To step

Part 1 of 3: State the delivery address

  1. Print or write the delivery address parallel to the longest side of the parcel. Write both addresses on the side of the parcel with the largest surface. This way you can leave enough space between both addresses without creating confusion about which address is the delivery address and which is the shipping address.
    • Do not write your address over one fold of the package.
  2. Use a pen or permanent pen to write down the address as clearly as possible. While most postal services accept addresses in pencil, they are more at risk of disappearing with parcel manipulation.
    • Choose a stylo in a color that clearly contrasts with the color of the package. If your package is white or light colored, then it is best to choose a stylo with black ink.
  3. Write the recipient's full name in the center of the package. Place the recipient's official name in place of a nickname to increase the chances that your parcel will reach the right person. If the person has recently moved, their previous residence can easily forward their mail.
    • If you are sending your parcel to a company, write the full name in the middle or send an email to the company to ask which address you should send the parcel to.
  4. Write the street and house number directly below the recipient's name. Also include the number or floor of the apartment, if relevant.
    • Line up the street and house number. You can write the number of the apartment or floor on the line below.
  5. Add the recipient's zip code and city or town name below. If you are not sure, then you know that your package will arrive correctly, even if the name is misspelled.
    • Do not use commas or periods in the address, not even between the zip code and the city.
    • In Belgium and the Netherlands you do not have to add anything more. If you are sending your parcel abroad, write the destination country under the address.

Part 2 of 3: Include the shipping address

  1. Place the shipping address in the top left corner of your package. Keep the delivery and shipping address clearly separated to avoid confusion. The delivery address is in the middle and the shipping address is in the top left corner.
    • Do not mix the delivery and shipping address.
  2. Before writing your own address, write "SENDER" in block letters. In case your delivery and shipping address are too close to each other, you can still avoid confusion by writing "shipper". Write a colon after "SENDER" and continue with your own address below.
  3. Write your own address in the same format as the delivery address. Start with your street name and house number, apartment or floor and / or explanations about the first line. Then you write your zip code and place of residence.
  4. Check that your handwriting is legible. Both the delivery and shipping address must be legibly written, but the legibility of the shipping address is especially important. If your parcel cannot be delivered for any reason, it will be returned to the sender.
    • Place a white sticker over the address and rewrite shipping address if it is unclear or blurred.

Part 3 of 3: Checking for common errors

  1. Do not use abbreviations that are not known to the postal service in your country.
    • Don't abbreviate city names. Write them out in full to avoid confusion.
  2. Use the correct zip code. An incorrect zip code can delay the delivery of your parcel more than not writing a zip code at all. In some cases, your parcel can even get lost. Look up the zip code before writing it down so that you add the correct one to the address.
  3. Review your addresses to make sure you have written down the correct ones. Write the addresses slowly, because by writing quickly, you also make mistakes faster. Compare your handwritten addresses with the correct delivery and shipping address. If you notice an error, put a white sticker over the addresses and write them again.
  4. Write your address on a box that is adapted to the weight and size of your parcel. Even if you write the correct address, if you do not choose the right box, the delivery of your package can be compromised. If you are unsure of the correct packaging for your parcel, ask for advice at the post office.

Tips

  • Write your address so clearly that it can be read from an arm's distance.
  • Make sure that the contents of your parcel are securely packed and sealed, especially if it concerns fragile items.
  • Frank your parcel based on the weight.
