Most external hard drives are compatible with Mac. However, they must be formatted for use with the Mac OS X operating system. You format USB sticks on your Mac using the "Disk Utility".

To step

  1. Insert your USB stick into one of the USB ports on your Mac.
  2. Open the "Applications" folder and click "Utilities".
  3. Click on "Disk Utility". The program window will now open in the foreground of the screen.
  4. Click on the name of your USB stick in the left pane of the Disk Utility.
  5. Click on the "Delete" option that you see at the top of the window.
  6. Now click on the expandable menu to the right of "Structure".
  7. Select "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" or your preferred format. The former option is almost always good. This has to do with the fact that most USB sticks are produced as standard for Windows.
  8. Enter a name for your stick in the "Name" field.
  9. Click the "Erase" button at the bottom right of the Disk Utility window.
  10. Click "Delete" again when the program asks for confirmation. Your USB stick or external drive will now be formatted so that you can use it on your Mac.
