Whether you're making a Halloween outfit or preparing yourself for a performance, a Peter Pan costume is always a success. Since the costume itself is quite easy to make, it is also a fantastic last minute option. Make the costume with just a few materials and wear it with a cheeky attitude and a twinkle in your eye!

To step

Part 1 of 3: Making the tunic and tights

  1. Buy green tights or leggings. The tights are the easiest part of the costume to plan. If you don't already have one, go to a store like HEMA and H&M and buy dark green or green-brown leggings or tights. If you buy nylon tights, make sure they are opaque instead of see-through.
    • If you feel uncomfortable wearing leggings or tights, buy sweatpants or skinny fit linen pants. You can also wear cut green shorts if you don't want to wear long pants.
  2. Buy a green shirt. If you don't already have one, get a large shirt in a yellow-green color. Make sure the shirt is a little big and fits like a tunic and hits mid-thigh.
    • Make sure you or whoever the costume is for try on the shirt before you buy it. The tunic is an iconic part of the Peter Pan costume, so a short or tight shirt won't look very good.
    • You can buy a plain T-shirt or polo shirt, or a shirt made from linen or some other similar material for a more earthy feel.
  3. Mark the shirt with a pencil. The Peter Pan tunic is known for its zigzag cut along the bottom and on the sleeves, which gives it a playful look. Match the shirt and use a pen to draw a large zigzag pattern at the shirt hem and sleeves.
    • When you are happy with the shirt size, make the zigzag pattern close to the edge of the fabric. If you think the shirt is too big, pull the zigzag higher up so you can cut the shirt to the desired length.
    • Also draw a V on the neck of the shirt if it does not have a V-neck.
  4. Cut along the lines. Lay the shirt flat on a table and use sharp scissors to cut along the lines you drew on the shirt. Try to cut sharply and neatly so that the shirt doesn't look frayed. Try on the shirt again and look in the mirror. If you notice that the zigzag looks uneven, take the shirt off and refine the cut.

Part 2 of 3: Making the cap

  1. Grab all the supplies. The cap is the most labor-intensive aspect of the costume as you have to make it yourself. You will need the following: 1 m of green felt, scissors, a needle or a sewing machine, green thread, a hot glue gun and a red feather. You can buy all of these supplies from a hobby or craft store.
    • If you prefer not to sew, you can make an unsewn hat by simply taking a green hat and turning the edges over. Glue a red feather to one side of the hat to create a perfectly good Peter Pan hat!
  2. Cut out a rounded triangle. Draw a triangle with a pen on the felt. The shape should be about the size of the cap when viewed from the side, so make sure it's big enough for your head or the head of the person the costume is for. Don't draw a perfect triangle, but make the top point of the triangle curved instead of straight and eccentric instead of directly centered.
    • To estimate how big the triangle should be, hold the fabric to your head to get a good idea. Since the hat should not fit tightly on your head, you only need to have an estimate.
  3. Cut out a long oblique triangle. Draw another shape roughly the shape of a blade, starting as rectangular and ending in a pointed tip. This will be the brim of the hat. Make sure the length of this section is about 1 inch longer than the length of the rounded triangle you just made. Cut it out with scissors.
  4. Make copies of the shapes. Take the rounded triangle and angled piece of felt and place them on top of the remaining felt. Use a pen to draw around both shapes. Cut out the shapes with scissors to make identical copies of the shapes you have already made.
  5. Sew the large triangles together. Line up the larger triangles by overlaying one triangle on top of the other. Use a needle and thread to sew with straight stitches.Sew the two pieces of fabric together along the sides of the triangle about 1 cm from the edge, leaving the bottom open. You can also use a sewing machine to sew the two pieces together.
    • You will sew along what will be the inside of the hat, so don't worry if you aren't making perfect stitches.
  6. Line up the edge pieces. When you are done sewing the body of the cap, turn it right side in to hide the stitches. Then take one of the long angled pieces of felt and position it so that it just overlaps the bottom of the cap on the inside. Pin the strip where it overlaps around the bottom of the cap. Do the same on the other side for the other piece of fabric, making sure the wide ends are next to each other and the narrow ends against each other.
  7. Sew the brim pieces to the cap. Use a needle and thread or a sewing machine to sew the brim along the bottom of the cap where you attached it. Also sew lengthwise along the overlap where the two wide sides of each long triangle meet. Remove the pins when you are done sewing. Then flip the pieces up to make the brim!
  8. Glue the feather on it. Take a red long feather and insert it into the brim on one side of the cap. Make sure the spring is angled at a 45 degree angle. When you're happy with the way it looks, glue it in place using the hot glue gun.

Part 3 of 3: Making accessories

  1. Make or buy a belt. Even though your costume is almost ready, you will need a few more accessories to create the classic Peter Pan look. If you have a brown belt, pull it around your waist over the green tunic. You can also tie a piece of brown cloth or string around your waist if you don't want to buy a belt.
  2. Buy a small toy dagger. Peter Pan carries a small dagger by his side in a holster on his belt. Buy a small toy dagger from a carnival or costume store. If a holster isn't included, just tuck it into the belt by your side. Since it is a toy, there is no chance it will hurt you!
    • Do not use a real knife. Even if you want to have a great costume, it's not worth the risk of accidentally stabbing yourself!
    • You can also make a dagger out of cardboard and paint it to look like a knife.
  3. Wear brown shoes. Wear a pair of brown or beige shoes with your suit, preferably moccasins or short boots. If you don't have perfect shoes for your costume, don't worry too much: people will be so impressed with your costume that they probably won't even look at your feet.

Tips

  • Have a friend dress up as Tinker Bell or Captain Hook to really empathize!
  • If you're a girl, pin your hair and tuck it into the cap to get Peter Pan's short haircut.
  • Remember to be extra naughty when wearing your costume!
