In this article, we'll show you how to check if your iPhone has been damaged by liquid. There are special indicators on the device that you should be able to see.

Method 1 of 2: iPhone 7, 6 and 5

1. Straighten a paperclip or find a SIM card removal tool. You can find the liquid damage indicator on an iPhone 5, 6 or 7 by opening the SIM card holder.
2. Find the SIM card holder. You can find the SIM card holder on the right side of your iPhone, there is a tiny hole at the bottom of the SIM card holder.
3. Insert the paper clip or SIM card removal tool into the hole. This will release the SIM card holder.
4. Apply pressure to get the SIM card holder out. By applying some force, the SIM card holder comes out. Make sure that the SIM card does not fall out of the holder after the holder has been removed from the device.
5. Shine a light in the hole of the SIM card holder. you can use a flashlight or hold the phone under your desk lamp.
6. Look for a red liquid damage indicator. If the iPhone has come into contact with liquid near the SIM card holder, you will see a red indicator in the center of the hole where the SIM card holder was.
   • With an iPhone 7, the indicator consists of a strip that takes up half of the opening.
   • With an iPhone 6, the indicator is roughly in the middle, just a little to the side.
   • With an iPhone 5, the indicator is round and is in the middle of the opening.
7. If you need a new phone, contact your carrier. In case of liquid damage, you can try to repair it yourself, but there is a chance that you will need a new device. Liquid damage is not covered under AppleCare, but it may be covered by your carrier's insurance, if you have one.

Method 2 of 2: iPhone 4, 4S and 3GS

1. Shine a light into the headphone output. One of the two liquid damage indicators can be found in the output of the headphones.
2. See if you can see the color red. If you see a half red circle when you look into the hole, it means the indicator has come into contact with liquid.
3. Shine a light in the charger port. The second indicator can be found at the bottom of the phone, in the charging port.
4. See if you can see the color red. If the indicator has come into contact with liquid, you will see a small red strip in the center of the port.
5. Consider the following steps. If the indicator shows that there has been contact with liquid, you can try to repair your iPhone yourself. But you may need to replace your phone, especially if it has been in contact with the liquid for a long time.
   • Water damage is not covered by AppleCare, but it may be covered by insurance from your carrier.

Tips

• Liquid damage indicators do not quickly turn red. If you find a red indicator on your iPhone, it means that the device has been exposed to liquid for a long time, or that the device has been submerged in liquid.
• If you discover fluid damage, don't wait too long to go to the repairman to avoid worse problems.
