Your contact list is actually just like an old card catalog. Everything is in the right place, if you move to another office you just have to make sure that you move your card catalog. It is the same with Gmail, you can move all your contacts at once to another mail service, or save them as one file as a backup. Read this article to learn how.

To step

  1. Open your Gmail account. The easiest way to access the Gmail contact list is with a web browser. The Gmail mobile app does not allow you to export contacts, you will have to open Gmail on a computer.
  2. Click on the Gmail link in the top left corner. There is a small arrow next to it. Click on "Contacts" in the menu that appears.
  3. Select the contacts you want to export. If you only want to export specific contacts, select the check box next to each contact to be exported. If you want to export all contacts, you don't have to tick anything.
    • You can search through the different contact groups using the menu on the left. Contacts are grouped in the groups you have created, as well as Google+ circles.
  4. Click the "More" button. This button can be found at the top of the contact list. There is a small arrow next to it. Select "Export ..." from the menu that appears.
  5. Choose which group of contacts you want to export. If you checked specific contacts in step 3, you can now choose the option "Selected contacts". You can also choose other groups or all contacts. The number next to each option indicates how many contacts are in that particular group.
  6. Select the format. Select the format in which you want to export the data from the drop-down menu. You can choose from three options, choose the option that best suits your needs:
    • Google CSV - To copy contacts from one Google account to another, use the Google CSV format. This is also the best way to back up your Google Contacts.
    • Outlook CSV - If you want to copy contacts to Outlook, Yahoo! Mail, Hotmail or other applications, use Outlook CSV format.
    • vCard - To copy contacts to Apple Address Book, use the vCard format.
  7. Download the file. Once you have selected the file format and clicked the "Download" button, the contacts file will be downloaded to your computer. The file will be downloaded automatically or you will first be asked where you want to save the file, depending on the settings of your browser. Once the file has been downloaded, you can import it to a program of your choice.
