Cluedo is a popular board game originally produced by Parker Brothers. It has been a favorite family game for generations. The object of the game is to solve a murder. Who did it? With what weapon? In which room? As you make suggestions regarding the suspect, weapon, and location, you'll be able to rule out possibilities and get closer and closer to the truth.

To step

Part 1 of 3: Playing the game

  1. Roll the dice or use a secret corridor to move your pawn when it is your turn. The first thing to do when it is your turn is to roll the dice or use a secret corridor to enter a room. You have to try to get into a different room every turn. Roll both dice and advance the number of pips thrown.
    • Remember that on Cluedo you can move up, down and sideways, but not diagonally.
    • Rosa Roodhart can always start, so whoever has her pawn can roll first. Then the turn continues clockwise.
  2. Wait until the way is clear if a player blocks you from entering a room. No two players may be on the same square at the same time. It is therefore possible that you will be locked in a room if a player occupies the space just outside the door of that room.
    • If you are locked in a room, you have to wait until the next turn and then see if the way is clear so you can leave the room.
  3. Make a suggestion every time you enter a room. Since the goal is to find out who committed the murder and in which room and with which weapon it was done, you must try to find the correct answer through elimination. Each time you enter a room, you have to make a suggestion about the possible solution.
    • For example, you can suggest that it was Colonel van Geelen, in the study with the lead pipe. Your fellow players will then go through their playing cards to see if they have any of the items listed. The player to your left is the first to disprove your theory, if he can.
    • Your fellow players will take turns showing you one card, if they have one of the cards from your suggestion. You can then check off these cards as possible solutions.
  4. Move the pawns and weapons into rooms while making suggestions. You must be in that room to make a suggestion about that room, but you must also move the suspect and the murder weapon into that room. Remove the suspect and murder weapon from their location and place them in the room you are suggesting.
    • There are no limits to the number of suspects and murder weapons that can be in the same room at any one time.
  5. If you're sure what cards are in the envelopes, impeach. You can only make an accusation if you have eliminated most of the possibilities and you think you know who the murderer is and where and with what weapon the murder was committed. If your accusation is correct, you win the game !!
    • Remember you can only make one accusation per game. If you're wrong, you lose the game. You must then put the cards back in the envelope and proceed to disprove other players' suggestions, but you cannot make any accusations yourself.

Part 2 of 3: Preparing for the game

  1. Decorate the board. Unfold the Cluedo board and place it on the playing surface. The game board contains nine rooms where the 6 characters can move between. Make sure you choose a playing surface where all players can sit around and everyone has easy access to the board.
    • Up to six people can play Cluedo at a time and they all need to be able to reach the board to move their pawns.
  2. Place all six characters and weapons on the board. You can place the characters randomly on the board, but make sure that each pawn is in a room at the start of the game. In addition, each pawn must have a weapon in the room. It doesn't matter which weapon is placed with which pawn.
  3. Give each player a detective's notebook and a pencil. Before you start playing, make sure each player has a notepad to keep track of suspects, weapons and rooms. The notepads have a list of all the suspects, rooms, and weapons so that players can check them off if they've ruled them out.
    • For example, if a player has Mrs. Blaauw van Draet, the candlestick and kitchen in hand, they cannot be in the envelope. This player can therefore already check out and exclude those items.

Part 3 of 3: Preparing the cards

  1. Keep the three types of cards separate and shuffle each pile. Cluedo has three different types of cards: suspects, rooms and weapons. Keep the different types of cards separate and shuffle each deck. Then place the piles face down on the board.
  2. Place the “Case File Confidential” envelope in the center of the board. Draw one card from each stack and place these cards in the “Case File Confidential” envelope. Make sure that no one can see these cards. The player who guesses first which three cards are in the envelope wins the game.
  3. Then shuffle all three piles together and distribute the cards among the players. After you put the cards in the “Case File Confidential” envelope, you can merge the remaining cards and shuffle them again. Then distribute these cards among the players, so that everyone has the same amount of cards.
    • You may look at your cards, but do not show them to the other players.

Tips

  • Do not forget to place all pawns on the board, even if you are playing with less than six people. The pawns are still suspects in the game and you will need them on the board to make suggestions.
