Have you forgotten a particular command that you want to use with Command Prompt? You can quickly get a list of most of the assignments so that you can search this list and find the one you need. You can also use the same function to get additional information about specific assignments. See below to learn how.

Part 1 of 2: Show a list of the most important and most used commands in the interpreter

1. Pay attention; TAKEOWN, NETSH, and many of the other more "intrusive" commands WILL NOT be discussed here.

2. To see what's in your interpreter, and which programs are using it, go to the cmd folder. Go to computer ---> C: ---> windows ---> System32. The programs with the Application type (with the extension .exe and not the extension .dll) are the current executable commands of the interpreter on your system.
3. Once you have opened the Command window, go to the command prompt and type the name of the application along with the /? attribute (see below) or type the word / help after the command and see what it does and how you can use it.
4. Open the Command window. You can open the Command window by pressing ⊞ Win+R. to open the Run box cmd. Windows 8 users can also click ⊞ Win+X and select Command Prompt from the menu.
5. Get the list of commands. Type Help and press ↵ Enter. A list of available commands appears. The list is in alphabetical order.
   • The list is usually longer than the Command window, so you will probably need to scroll to find the command you need.
   • The list varies slightly depending on your version of Windows, as commands are occasionally added or removed.
   • A brief description of the assignment will be displayed next to the listing.
   • You can do the assignment Help at any time in the Command window.

Part 2 of 2: Getting help for a specific assignment

1. Open the Command Prompt. You can open the Command Prompt by pressing ⊞ Win+R. to open the Run box and enter the letters cmd type in. In Windows 8 you can also press ⊞ Win+X and select Command Prompt from the menu.
2. Type Helpfollowed by the command. For example, if you want to learn more about the "mkdir" command, type help mkdir and press ↵ Enter. The additional information will be displayed below.
3. Review the information that is provided. The amount of information you receive depends on the assignment and how complex it is. Help can only provide information about how to phrase the assignment correctly, or can provide information about how to do more with it than is normally the case.
