Before you start catching all the Pokémon, you must first collect all of the HMs. There are 7 HMs in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen: HM 1, Cut, HM 2, Fly, HM 3, Surf, HM 4, Strength, HM 5, Flash, HM 6, Rock Smash and HM 7, Waterfall. Each is found in a different way. In all, you will have to use a combination of skill and patience to get them.

To step

Part 1 of 7: Cut

  1. Go to Cerulean City and fight the trainers on the bridge. After defeating all the trainers, go east and fight the trainers (and catch any wild Pokémon you encounter).
  2. Enter the house once you have dealt with all the trainers. The Pokémon Researcher Bill will be there and look like a Pokémon. Go to him and help him.
  3. Once you get Bill out of the Pokémon costume, he will thank you and give you the SS Anne Ferry ticket and ask if you would like to go in his place.
  4. Once you get the ticket, go to Vermillion City and then south to the harbor. Board the ship, fight all the trainers and then search for the Captain. He will give you Hidden Move 1, aka Cut. With Cut you can cut down small trees blocking paths and make them inaccessible to you.
    • You'll have to fight Gary on the way to the Captain. Make sure your Pokémon are strong and can fight (there is a girl on the ship with whom Pokémon can rest).

Part 2 of 7: Fly

  1. Go to Celadon City; You can find Fly on Route 16; west of Celadon City.
  2. When in Celadon, head west, follow Route 16 out of town, and once out of town, go up and cut down the tree.
  3. Go through the double building into the "hidden house".
  4. Talk to the girl inside and she will ask you to keep the house a secret; say yes and she will reward you with Hidden Move 2 aka Fly. With Fly, you can use your flying Pokémon to go to any Pokémon Center you've been to before.
    • You need a Pokémon that knows the Hidden Move Cut.

Part 3 of 7: Surf

  1. Go to the Safari Zone in Fuchsia City.
  2. Once in the Safari Zone, you must go to Zone Four, enter the house and collect your reward; Hidden Move 3, Surf. Surf lets you "surf" water with a Water-type Pokémon.
    • There are a minimum number of steps you can do, so if you just want to get Surf and don't want to catch Pokémon you will need to enter it separately for those purposes. It will cost $ 500 to enter.

Part 4 of 7: Strength

  1. After obtaining the Surf move in Fuchsia City, enter the Warden's house. He will ask you something but will be inaudible; you have to find his Golden Teeth (which you may have already found when looking for Surf).
  2. You can find the Golden Teeth by first entering the Safari Zone, then Zone 4, and looking for the Golden Teeth there.
  3. When you find them, you must re-enter the Warden's house. He will reward you with Hidden Move 4, Strength. Strength allows you to push boulders out of the way (such as boulders in front of cave entrances, etc.).

Part 5 of 7: Flash

  1. Use Fly to go to Route 2 (or travel through Diglett's Cave with a Pokémon that knows the Hidden Move Cut) south of Pewter City.
  2. Go through the gatehouse and up the stairs; the help should give you the HM if you are carrying ten Pokémon. If so you will get Hidden Move 5, Flash. With Flash you can illuminate dark caves (such as the Rock Tunnel).

Part 6 of 7: Rock Smash

  1. After defeating the Cinnabar Island gym you will be escorted to One Island. Go to the other end of the island and use Surf. You will eventually come across a cave (Ember Spa).
  2. Enter the spa and talk to the man next to the waterfall.
  3. He will give you Hidden Move 6, Rock Smash. With Rock Smash you can crush small, falling rocks that block your path.

Part 7 of 7: Waterfall

  1. Go to Four Island and enter the cave. Explore the cave and push the rocks away (with the help of a Pokémon that knows HM Strength).
  2. You will eventually end up at a Pokeball that you could see just past the cave entrance; Press A to get Hidden Move 7, Waterfall. With Waterfall you can enter waterfalls that block your path.

Warnings

  • It won't be easy to get the HMs and it will take you the whole game, so don't rush to get them.
