The details of this article do not cover how to make your account more secure. For this, Apple provides a service called FileVault.

This technique explains how to use DMG as a secure container for your files.

Steps

  1. 1 Create a new folder and put the files you want to put in the disk image there.
  2. 2 Right-click (or CTRL-Click), click on the folder and select “Get Info” and remember the size of its contents.
  3. 3Open Disk Utility (Applications> Utilities> Disk Utility)
  4. 4 Click on the "New Image" icon to create a new disk image. Enter a name for the image, and select a size appropriate for the size of the folder you created in Step 2.
  5. 5 Select the encryption type (128 or 256bit), set the Partition to "Single Partition - Apple Partition Map" and the format to "read / write disk image."Click the Create button.
  6. 6 Create a complex password and enter it in the appropriate fields. Uncheck the "Remember password in my keychain" checkbox, as this reduces the security of your data. Click the "OK."
  7. 7 Put the contents of the folder from Step 2 into the newly created disk image.
  8. 8 Disconnect the disk by dragging its icon to the Trash. Also, in the Search Engine, you can click on Eject, next to the connected image.
  9. 9 Each time you try to open the image, you will be prompted for a password.

Tips

  • On the disk image, you can save bank information, credit reports and other important documents.
  • On this image, you can save the Quicken data file, however, you will need to mount the disk image before you want to open Quicken.

Warnings

  • Don't add a password to your keychain
  • Try not to forget your password, because once you encrypt these files, you won't be able to access them without a password.
  • Do not write down the password on your computer.
  • DMG files are only available on Mac.
