![How to Check and Replace an Oxygen Sensor (Air Fuel Ratio Sensor)](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/_Kr-c8eBl5E/hqdefault.jpg)
Content
The first sign that the oxygen sensor is out of order is a lit "Check Engine" light. A quick diagnosis at a car service will show you which electronic unit is out of order. Depending on the car model and engine type, from 2 to 4 oxygen sensors can be installed on your car. Usually 1 or 2 before the catalytic converter and the same after it. The car service will tell you which sensor is out of order.
Steps
1 Find an oxygen sensor. It looks like a candle and is found in your car's exhaust system. An electrical wire must come up to it.
2 Disconnect the wire. Press down on the latch with a flat screwdriver and pull on the connector.
3 Unscrew the oxygen sensor with an adjustable wrench or a special puller. An SAE 7/8 wrench is suitable for most oxygen sensors.
4 Compare the new oxygen sensor with the old one. If the new sensor just has wires sticking out, you have to do a little work.
- Cut the connector from the old sensor and strip the wires. Connect the wires with crimp connectors.
- Use shrink sleeve to provide insulation.
- Check the instructions for where to connect each wire.
5 Install the new sensor in reverse order. Screw the sensor into the exhaust system and tighten with an adjustable wrench or a special bit. Be careful not to strip the threads.
6 Connect the wire to the sensor.
7 Switch on the ignition, but do not start the engine. Look with a scanner if there are any errors in the on-board computer.
8 Start your car. The malfunction should go away instantly.
Tips
- Ask if there is an on-board computer scanner in the store where you buy the new oxygen sensor.
- To unscrew a rusted old oxygen sensor, it can be helpful to lubricate the threads.
- Ask the auto shop where you rented the scanner to clear your computer's memory from errors.
Warnings
- Wait for the engine and exhaust system to cool down before starting work. Otherwise, you may burn yourself.
- You need to lift the vehicle on a lift to replace the sensor that is located after the catalytic converter. Observe safety precautions when using the lift and wear safety glasses.
