The bamboo of happiness, also known as the Butcher Plant, is not actually a bamboo. It is a member of the lily family that grows initially in the deep shade of the rainforest. But it is a beautiful segmented plant that, unlike real bamboo, is easy to grow indoors. With a little skill, your plant will be happy in your home. A little extra fertilization can be the difference between a happy and diseased butcher plant!

Steps

Part 1 of 3: Choosing a Happiness Bamboo Plant

  1. 1 Find a plant. Look for the Happiness Bamboo plant at your local gardening store or nursery. The plant can be labeled in one of the following ways: Happiness Bamboo, Butchery Plant, and sometimes according to its real name, Dracaena Sander.
  2. 2 Choose a plant with excellent health. Any plant size will work for a start, but make sure it smells fresh, as an unpleasant smell indicates poor health. Signs of a healthy condition include:
    • The plant is completely uniform green, no spots.
    • The plant has large stems.
    • Obviously the plant was well fertilized (good, strong growth).

Part 2 of 3: Planting a Happiness Bamboo Plant

  1. 1 Choose a pot that is about 2 inches / 5 cm larger in diameter than the plant. You can use an airtight pot and grow the plant in clear water, or you can plant it in a pot with a drain hole.
    • If you are growing it in standing water, you will need a few pebbles to keep the plant upright. If in soil, try mixing a third of sand, peat, and regular soil to ensure effective drainage.
    • If you are growing in stagnant water, it is best to keep the water level one inch above the top of the supporting pebbles. But for this you will need to change the water at least once a week to prevent the plant from rotting. It is a good idea to rinse the pot, pebbles, and replant each time you do this.
    • If you are growing your plant in soil, keep the soil moist (as opposed to wet or dry) between waterings. Then water the plant so well that the soil is completely saturated.
  2. 2 Add a very light fertilizer from time to time. Too much fertilizer is worse than none at all, so use with care. This is especially true for potted plants because the fertilizer will not be diluted by rain and will not come off like outdoors.

Part 3 of 3: Create a bamboo stem design in the designated area

If you want to create a design from the Happiness Bamboo plant, select a few primary stems to make a linked design and display it for everyone to see.

  1. 1 Remove the leaves. When removing, pluck in the direction of the leaves to avoid leaving marks on the stems. Use a clean, sterilized knife to do this (for example, immerse the blade in solvent or something similar).
    • If desired, cut the structure into one or more of the stems. Again, use a clean, sterilized knife.
    • Some people place the candle at the top of the stem. If you want to do this, don't mark the plant taller than 2 inches / 5 cm from the top of the stem.
  2. 2 Arrange the stems as you wish. Keep the design in mind while doing this.
  3. 3 Tie the stems in place with ribbon wire or other tape. Place the entire structure in a jar or bowl. Add pebbles to complete the look and hold the structure in place.
  4. 4 Put it on public display. Place on a table as a centerpiece, in a sideboard or on a windowsill. Maintain the plant as described above.

Tips

  • Using bottled spring water will ensure rapid growth and a beautiful dark green color. (Tap water often contains chemicals and additives that are not found in the natural habitat of the plant. Watering the plant with tap water often causes the leaves to turn yellow and the plant dies over time.)
  • Do not expose the plant to direct sunlight.
  • Add fertilizer every two months.
  • Using distilled water can lead to yellowing of the leaves, as the plant lacks minerals.
  • Don't give the plant too much water.
  • Add diluted liquid aquarium plant fertilizer (1-2 drops).

Warnings

  • If you notice an unpleasant odor coming from your plant, it is probably too late to save it. Some people say that the rot that causes this smell can be bad for your health. Therefore, it is best to throw the plant away and purchase another one if this happens. After that, change the water more often so that this does not happen again.
  • By the way, if your bamboo has sprouts outside of the main stems, these sprouts can be saved from rot. Just cut them off and place them in fresh water. This is especially important if your Happiness Bamboo actually works and is dear to you, you will be heartbroken simply to throw it away and purchase another.
