Pendant lights will help to change the look of the room and add coziness. They come in various shapes and sizes, which allows you to choose the model according to your preferences. Replacing an old chandelier with a pendant lamp is a basic home improvement task that even a beginner can handle. Changing lighting can change the ambience of a room in minutes.

Steps

Part 1 of 2: Preparation

  1. 1 Unpack the light. Lay the parts out carefully within reach.
  2. 2 Disconnect electricity. Find an introductory machine or electrical panel and turn off the electricity in the room or part of the house where you will install the lamp.
    • Failure to do so before starting work may result in electric shock.
  3. 3 Remove the old lamp. If you are not installing a lamp in a new or renovated home, then you will need to remove the old chandelier first.
    • Disconnect the lamp. The procedure will depend on the type of chandelier installed. If possible, have someone hold the chandelier while you remove it from the ceiling to prevent it from falling over.
    • Disconnect old connections. These are small plastic caps that cover the wire connections from the luminaire and internal wiring. It is usually sufficient to simply bend counterclockwise until disengaged.
    • Before disconnecting the wires, it does not hurt to check the absence of voltage with a tester.
    • Finally, disconnect the wires and remove any remaining parts of the old fixture that are still attached to the ceiling (such as the base and rim).
  4. 4 Check the ceiling. The installation site must be structurally sound. The luminaire junction box should be fixed to a beam or other support, not just screwed into drywall.
    • An inadequately secured luminaire may simply fall over. Among other things, this is a direct violation of building codes. If you do not have proper support to support the luminaire, do not proceed with the following installation steps.
  5. 5 Check the junction box. Make sure all screws are in place and securely fastened. Tighten the screws if necessary, but do not use excessive force.

Part 2 of 2: Installing the pendant light

  1. 1 Secure the power wires. Find an assistant to hold the fixture under the ceiling while you connect the wires from the fixture to the wires from the junction box.
    • The connection is made according to the instructions for the luminaire. Usually, the white wire is connected to the white wire, and the black wire to the black wire. Twist the bare ends of the wires together.
    • If the exposed ends of the wires are too short, then you can strip them with a special tool.
    • Screw on the wire nuts / connectors to cover the exposed connections and secure them securely. If not included with the fixture, purchase one from any hardware store.
  2. 2 Carry out grounding. Locate the ground wire on the luminaire. Depending on your wiring, you screw it to the ground screw in the junction box or attach it to the protruding ground wire.
    • The ground wire is usually a green wire or bare copper wire.
    • If you have a ground screw, tighten it to secure the wire.
  3. 3 Secure the wires. Push or fold the wires into the junction box, making sure they are all secured with wire nuts.
  4. 4 Install the mounting bracket and / or mounting screws. Your new luminaire should be supplied with a bracket and / or mounting screws to securely attach the luminaire to the junction box.
    • The appearance depends on the design of your luminaire. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.
  5. 5 Hang up the lamp. Attach the dome or lamp base to the screws or bracket. This process will also depend on the design of the luminaire, so it is recommended that you first read the directions on the packaging.
    • In some cases, the challenge is to match the fixing screws with the small holes in the luminaire and turn the housing a quarter turn.
    • In other cases, you will need to screw the luminaire to the mounting bracket.
  6. 6 Screw in the bulb. Screw a light bulb of suitable power and size into the lamp.
  7. 7 Turn on the power on the machine. Your light should now turn on.
    • If the light does not work, then turn off the electricity again and check the wiring.
  8. 8 Complete the installation. Install all remaining luminaire elements (bezel, cover, shade) and adjust the height.

Tips

  • For optimal illumination, the pendant light should be positioned 150-165 cm above floor level or 75 cm above the table surface. Do not install luminaires in places where they will obstruct the passage. Most luminaire models are height adjustable.
  • If you are installing a pendant lamp in a location where there were no lighting fixtures before, or if you are installing several small fixtures in place of one, then you will need to perform additional wiring. If you do not have the appropriate experience, then seek the help of an electrician, since this task is much more difficult than simply installing a luminaire.

Warnings

  • Before installing a new luminaire, check the condition of the old wires in the junction box. Do not connect the luminaire to wires with signs of wear or burn through. This situation can threaten a fire.
