If you want to do something for a young mother but don't have a lot of time, then a knitted baby blanket can be the perfect gift. You can make it from a variety of decorative patterns, or create your own pattern using your favorite decorative stitch.

Steps

  1. 1 Choose which stitches or stitches you would like to use. Stitch search methods include:
    • Consult the Stitch Reference (collection of instructions on how to knit decorative stitches).
    • Look for ready-made blankets online.
    • Use a garter stitch (knit all stitches on both sides of the fabric). As a result, you will get relief on both sides. You can also use the stocking stitch (alternating rows and purl stitches) to knit on one side of the embossed baby blanket and smooth on the other.
  2. 2 Choose your yarn. You can knit a baby blanket from just about any yarn, but there are a few general rules:
    • The thicker or shorter the yarn, the faster the blanket will knit.
    • The softer the better.
    • Some parents choose to use only natural fibers such as cotton or wool. However, many will appreciate the ease of care of man-made fibers such as polyester.
  3. 3 Choose your knitting needles. Most yarn labels recommend appropriate knitting needles for a particular yarn type.
  4. 4 Knit a test piece, also called a template, from the yarn with the knitting needles of your choice. A typical specimen measures 4 "by 4" (10x10 cm).
    • If you are using a pattern that has already been worked out, it will show you how many stitches and lines it will take you to make a pattern of a certain size. Adjust the needle size up or down until you reach the desired number of stitches and lines.
    • If you are doing your own pattern, you can adjust the size of the knitting needle as needed until you like the look of the stitches. Then count the number of lines and lines on a piece of sample in 1 inch by 1-inch (2.5 x 2.5 cm). Multiply this by the number of inches wide and you get the size of your finished baby blanket. (If you are using metric measurements, multiply by the number of centimeters of the finished blanket width, then divide by 2.5.) This will tell you how many stitches to drop and how many rows to knit to make the correct size baby blanket.
    • If you are using a decorative pattern, it may require a multiple of a certain number of stitches (for example, a multiple of 4 or multiple of 5). You can also add a few stitches or a stocking stitch on either side of the blanket as a piping. Round the target number of stitches up or down to get the desired multiple of the number of stitches, then add any number of stitches to the total.
  5. 5 Type in the number of stitches provided in the pattern, or if you are creating your own pattern, the number that you calculated based on the calibration pattern.
  6. 6 Knit all the way down the line after any decorative stitch or full baby blanket pattern.
    • Turn your piece and continue knitting until the blanket is the length you want.
  7. 7 Close the row (also called a reset).
    • If you don't know how to fold, try this: Tie two stitches, then use your left knitting needle and gently lift the bottom stitch onto the right knitting needle and away from the knitting needle being cast onto the other stitch (which remains on the right knitting needle). Tie another stitch with 2 stitches on the right needle and then pry out the bottom seam onto the top stitch.
  8. 8 Repeat and then pull the tail of the end of the yarn to the last stitch.
