1 Take your measurements. Measure from the top of the shoulders (usually where the seams are on the shirt) to where you want the dress to end. Then measure the widest part of your hips. Add 3-5 cm to your shoulder measurements and at least 10 cm to your hip measurements to make the dress looser (especially if your shoulders are wider than your hips). If you want to make the skirt more fluffy, add 15-20 cm.
  • For example, let's say that from my shoulders to my knees (where I want the dress to end) is 100 cm, and the volume of my hips is 92 cm.This means that a piece of fabric 109 cm wide and the same length is ideal for me. although 109 by 53 is fine too.
  • Technically, you will divide the fabric into 4 equal rectangles (one side in length by a quarter of the thighs, adding space for the seams). This means that the longer your rectangles are, the better you can use them.
  • As a rule, for seams, add 1.5 cm to each edge.
  • 2 Choose a fabric. You can use any fabric. White or multi-colored fabrics will work, but you can also use old tablecloths, curtains, or scarves.
    • Stretch fabrics, like knitwear, work very well, but are very difficult to handle. To do this, you must have a well-tuned sewing machine (ideally equipped). Sew carefully.
  • 3 Cut the fabric into rectangles. Cut the fabric into 4 equal rectangles. As mentioned above, their length should match the volume of your shoulders, and you should also consider the seams. They should also be as wide as the size of your 4-piece thighs, and there should be enough fabric to fit the pieces.
    • Using the measurements from the first step, our rectangles, as an example, should be 107 cm long and 26 cm wide.
  • Part 2 of 3: Put the pieces together

    1. 1 Sew on the shoulders. Take two rectangles and pin the short sides of one rectangle with the short sides of the other rectangle to the right side. This will create the appearance of the shoulders. Sew both pieces by hand or with a typewriter, creating a string 1.5 cm further from the edge.
      • When you have sewn on both pieces of fabric, you may want the needles to draw a line along which you will make the string. However, you will want the needles to be perpendicular to the line so you can sew without removing them (although you should).
    2. 2 Attach the pieces and measure the neck hole. Sewing the shoulders together will create 2 long strips. Gather them together with the right side and secure them with a stitching. This will become the center line of the dress. Now measure and mark how to cut the hole in the front and back.
      • On each side, measure the opening from the shoulders and mark it with a sewing chalk.
    3. 3 Sew on the strips. Sew the bottom hem along the shoulder to the side you secured. Stop when you reach the mark on the back and front lines. Secure the stitches, cut the threads and repeat on the other side.
      • Secure the stitches by sewing them with a 1.5 cm machine, sew as usual until you reach the last point, and then go through them again. This will allow you to cut the threads and show off the dress without the fear of the seams coming apart.
    4. 4 Hem the bottom of the dress. Take this opportunity and hem the bottom edge of the dress, pinning it 1-2.5 cm (depending on how much you want to shorten it) and then hem.
    5. 5 Measure your waist. Now you want to make the elastic waist. Take an elastic band, a 6mm - 15mm tape will do.Measure the smallest points of the waist and 5 cm above and below the waistline. Then measure from shoulders to waist. Using these measurements, mark the lines on the dress, 5 cm at the top and the same at the bottom.
      • This construction (using three levels of elasticity) will create a puffy look. You can pin it at the center of the waist, and sew one stitch if you like.
      • However, you are not required to do so. You can also attach a belt. It will be even better if the belt material is very thin, silky and matches the color.
    6. 6 Cut and attach the elastic at the waist. Cut the strips so that they fit around your waist without stretching them. Then cut them in half, half on each side. Attach one edge to one side of the dress (including seam allowances) and then the other edge to the other side. Find the middle and pin it in the middle of the dress. Line them up and attach them permanently to the dress. When you've done all this, the dress should look beautiful.
      • Remember to do this on both sides of the dress - front and back.
    7. 7 Sew in an elastic band. When you attach it, sew the elastic into the fabric. Remember to secure it with stitches as you did for the center seam.
    8. 8 Attach and measure hand fabric. You should now have one large rectangle with a hole in the center for the neck. Place the panels so that the sides are right side up (folded over the shoulder seam), and then attach the 2 remaining sides to one another. Measure 13 cm (or more, depending on how much you want to open your arms) from the shoulders, and mark in the same way as you did for the neckline.
      • Measure the volume of your hand, and divide this figure in half. Add at least 1.5 cm to make the sleeves comfortable. You might want to add more as the sleeves should be loose. Make sure you don't lengthen your sleeves too much, you only need to cover your underwear.
    9. 9 Sew the sides. Begin sewing from the bottom and up to the mark where you marked the hand holes. Secure the stitches in the same way as you did for the center seam.
    10. 10 Finish off the edges. You should now have something that looks like a dress! In principle, you can already wear it, but it is better to finish the edges, and add some changes to make your dress look even better and more professional. You can:
      • Add a bias tape around the hem of the dress. Take folded tape. Unfold one of the three sides and place the right side on the inside of the dress. Sew on. Then unfold the rest of the tape and position it so that it covers all the edges of the dress. Sew on the outside. Sew along the neckline and sleeves as well, if desired.
      • Add belt loops at the waist by making small rectangles from the fabric and sewing them on.
      • Add other materials and details to the dress: pockets, lace trim or lace trim on the back.

Part 3 of 3: Make a different dress

    1. 1 Make a dress from a pillowcase. You can make a regular pillowcase dress by adding straps on top. When you attach them, all you have to do is add a nice sash or other accessories to make your dress look good.
    2. 2 Sew an Empire style dress. Sew the skirt onto your existing shirt, this way you can make a pretty dress. It is perfect for highlighting your femininity on a summer day.
    3. 3 Dress them up with sheets. Use an old sheet for a short, summer dress. It is very easy to make and does not require any special skills.
    4. 4 Make a dress using your favorite skirt. You can make a beautiful dress in a few minutes by sewing a T-shirt or T-shirt to the skirt. Just join the edges on the right side, and then sew them on at the waist.
      • Keep in mind that you cannot open or close the skirt, so you only need a stretch skirt for this dress.
