Sometimes it happens that you have to sleep on the couch, for example, when you are staying longer than usual, and a friend suggests lying on the couch. Or when you are traveling and someone has asked you to sleep in the living room on the couch. Sometimes you may need to sleep on the couch because guests have arrived and there are not enough sleeping places to accommodate everyone. No matter what reason you are forced to sleep on the couch, there are several ways to make the couch comfortable and sleep sound on it.

Steps

Part 1 of 2: Making the Sofa

  1. 1 Move the pillows. If possible, remove the cushions and turn them over for a cleaner, more level sleeping surface. Clean off any crumbs and dirt on the pillows, if needed. If the cushions on the back of the sofa can be removed, do so - this will give you more room to sleep, which means it will be more comfortable for you.
    • Place the back cushions on the floor next to the sofa so that you fall onto a soft surface if you roll off the sofa.
    • If you sleep on a sofa made of slippery material (such as leather), be sure to place something soft on the floor.
  2. 2 Place something soft on the sofa. Usually sofas are made of less breathable materials than beds. Some parts of the sofa may be worn out and sagging. Try to smooth out any unevenness and uncomfortable places on the sofa with blankets, creating a fairly flat and comfortable surface. A thick duvet works well for this.
    • If you are unable to fit a blanket or sheets, you can fit your own belongings. Sweaters and warm bags can also be helpful.
  3. 3 Lay your linen. Try to make the sofa as comfortable as possible. Place a sheet on top of the blanket. The sheet is likely to be too large, so tuck in the edges. Place a pillow with a clean pillowcase where you will lie with your head. Do not rest your head on the armrests, as they are often too high and uncomfortable.
    • Sofa upholstery is less cleaned than other surfaces, so try not to touch it with your skin.
    • If you don't have a proper pillow, use a throw pillow or sofa pillow, but be sure to use a pillowcase. If you don't have a pillowcase, get a clean cotton T-shirt instead of a pillowcase.
    • If you don't have sheets, use some clean, soft material instead. Wear pajamas to avoid contact with the upholstery.
  4. 4 Clean the sofa. If you know in advance that you will have to sleep on the couch, then clean it thoroughly. You can hire professionals or do it yourself. Remove all pillows and dust them out. Vacuum to remove dust, hair, and pet hair from the upholstery. If possible, wash the sofa with water and a special detergent that matches the type of upholstery.
    • Check to see if there is a tag on the couch somewhere with instructions on how to clean it. Sometimes such tags are sewn at the bottom near the legs. Often, the label simply indicates a letter that tells you how to clean the sofa.
    • "W" - can be cleaned with water-based detergents.
    • "S" - dry cleaning only or cleaning with waterless detergents.
    • "WS" is either dry cleaning or water based cleaning.
    • "X" - professional cleaning or vacuum cleaning.
    • "O" - made from natural materials and can only be washed in cold water.

Part 2 of 2: Sleeping on the couch

  1. 1 Take care of a comfortable temperature. Temperature significantly affects the quality of sleep. Even if the room is hot, put a sheet and blanket next to it in case it gets cold at night. If possible, open a window or adjust the batteries. A room that is rarely slept in can often be uncomfortable or too stuffy for sleeping.
  2. 2 Make the room dark. Close curtains or blinds. If you have a sleep mask, you can wear it, or simply cover yourself from the light with a pillow. Living rooms often don't have dark curtains, so you can cover yourself with a blanket to keep it dark enough to sleep.
  3. 3 Take care of the silence. If you go to bed in a house where there are many other people, and people are constantly passing and making noise (or may walk and make noise in the morning), then take care of the silence, for example, you can use earplugs. [3] Do not make earplugs out of available materials (cotton wool or tissues), as they can get stuck in your ears. Do not improvise earplugs out of cotton or tissue, as these may become stuck in your ear.
    • Ask other people who will sleep in the house to be quiet. Do not forget about politeness, regardless of whether you are a guest or a host.
  4. 4 Do not forget about the usual routines before bed. Do whatever you normally do before going to bed. For example, if you usually watch TV, take a shower, have a cup of herbal tea, hug your favorite stuffed animal, and go to bed at 10pm, then do the same in your usual order. One bedtime, do the same things that you do before bedtime and go to bed on the couch.

Tips

  • If you are uncomfortable sleeping on the couch, or if you wake up with back pain after sleeping one night on the couch, go to bed on the floor the next night. Your spine may be better on a firm surface.
