An emergency message is one of those things that seem simple enough until you have to face them in reality.When you’re so nervous, it’s lucky if you’re still able to remember your own name! If you are in or witness to an emergency, take a deep breath and remember these instructions.

Steps

  1. 1 Assess the severity of the situation. Before reporting an emergency, make sure it is really urgent. Call emergency services if you think the situation is life-threatening or otherwise extremely dangerous. Here are examples of emergency situations that must be reported:
    • a crime, especially if it is happening right now;
    • fire;
    • a life-threatening situation that requires immediate medical attention;
    • car accident.
  2. 2 Call emergency services. Their number varies depending on the country. In Russia it is 112. There are also separate numbers: 101 - firefighters, 102 - police, 103 - ambulance (from a landline phone, respectively, 01, 02 and 03).
  3. 3 Share your location. The first thing the dispatcher will ask is where you are so that emergency services can get there as quickly as possible. Give the exact full address if possible. If you are not sure about it, provide approximate information and indicate the points of reference.
  4. 4 Provide the dispatcher with your phone number. The dispatcher needs to have this information so that he can call you back if necessary.
  5. 5 Describe the nature of the incident. Speak calmly and clearly and tell the dispatcher why you are calling. Give the most important details first, then answer the dispatcher's additional questions as accurately as possible.
    • If you are reporting a crime, describe the person committing it.
    • If you are reporting a fire, describe how it started and where exactly it occurs. If someone has already been hurt or missing, please report it.
    • If you call an ambulance, explain exactly what happened and what symptoms the patient or victim is currently experiencing.
  6. 6 Follow the instructions of the dispatcher. After the dispatcher receives all the necessary data from you, in certain situations he will tell you how to help a person or people before the arrival of emergency services. For example, you may be instructed on how to provide emergency medical care, such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Be very careful not to hang up until asked to do so. Then follow the instructions given.
  7. 7 Stay on the line until the dispatcher tells you to disconnect. Even if you cannot hold the phone to your ear or turn on the speakerphone, do not interrupt the connection.
  8. 8 Hang up when the dispatcher tells you to do so. If you need to call again, do so by following the instructions in this article again.

Warnings

  • Never do not make fake calls. You are risking the lives of people who really need help at this time. Fake calls to emergency services are illegal and in some countries are punishable by fines and / or imprisonment in some countries.
  • If the emergency is a fire, do not stay in the building. Leave it immediately and call from a nearby house or from the street.
  • When you call, you will be very nervous and may have difficulty remembering your own address, even if you are at home. Write all this information on a piece of paper and stick it to the wall next to your phone. This way you can read the data to the dispatcher when he asks you to.
  • If you are worried about how to contact emergency services during a protracted emergency (such as an earthquake or flood), find the information ahead of time and take the necessary action.
