Playing Pokémon is fun and challenging, and the cards are designed to be played in different decks. There is no need to stick to the “pre-built” decks made by the manufacturer - you can customize your own deck by choosing your favorite Pokémon from different decks. This article will help you build your own deck so you can start taking part in tournaments and local leagues!

Steps

  1. 1 Think about what kind of deck you want to build. Do you like playing Water Pokémon or Fire Pokémon? Maybe combat or psychic? Most decks have only two types of Pokémon. Some decks can use more types effectively, and there are decks that use only one type.
    • It is advisable to choose Pokémon that complement each other. For example, Water and Electric Pokémon and Fire and Grass Pokémon are good combinations.
    • Remember to also consider the weaknesses of your types. If your psychic Pokémon have a weakness for darkness, play with combat types (as most dark Pokémon take more damage from combat type) to counter dark type Pokémon.
    • Don't forget that you can use the colorless type of Pokémon in any deck to fill in the missing spots. Pokémon of this type often have beneficial effects. They can also use any type of energy frequently, so they can be used in any deck.
  2. 2 Develop a winning strategy. A clear understanding of how to make your opponent lose will also come in handy. There are three ways you can win in the collectible card game about Pokémon: collect six enemy prize cards, remove all enemy Pokémon from the field, and make sure that the enemy does not have any more cards at the beginning of his turn. Ask yourself:
    • What will your deck focus on to win? What is the best way to achieve victory?
    • What exactly can your opponent do against your strategy? What cards can you use to minimize your weaknesses and strengthen your strengths?
  3. 3 Remember to maintain a good balance when choosing your cards. Most decks contain an average of 20 Pokemon cards, 25 Trainer cards, and about 15 Energy cards, although most often the composition of the deck depends on its type.
    • For example, the 2012 Blastoaz / Keldeo deck contained 14 Pokémon cards, 32 Trainer cards, and 14 Energy cards. It all depends on what you are trying to achieve.
  4. 4 Imagine Pokemon is a three-way RPG game. First of all, you need to have multiple copies of your main attacking Pokémon, as well as more Gen 1 Pokémon than fully developed Gen 2 Pokémon. This is necessary in order for you to have an active Pokémon and a lot of spare ones.
    • First Generation Pokémon will go out very quickly, so stock up on some Evolutions for the latest Generation Pokémon and upgrade them as quickly as possible so your chances of winning are increased after the first wave of weak Pokémon leaves.
    • Finally, always think about the ending of the game and keep one or two really strong Pokémon that you can get hold of by the end of the game. Most decks have "starting" cards like Cleffa and Pichu, these cards will help you start the game with confidence.
  5. 5 Balance your cards. It is very important to have cards that help each other. This is essential in a good deck! Strategy is very important!
    • Your cards must be synergistic. For example, Hydraigon and Darkai-Ex are great for free movement of Pokémon and energies. Find other great combinations that you can use to your advantage.
  6. 6 Choose trainers who would give positive effects to your Pokémon. You need to have 5-8 good cards. If you cannot draw the required cards, you cannot win.
    • Do not forget that you can put up to 4 of the same cards in your deck, and if your deck is highly dependent on an event, you should increase your chances for this event to happen by putting several copies of the most important cards into the deck.
    • Your deck should have 5 or more cards that will support and strengthen your Pokémon. You can leave the remaining space for counteracting weakening cards or for cards that update the composition of the cards in hand.
  7. 7 Test the deck - draw cards as if playing with an opponent. Remember, to start playing, you must draw at least one Generation 1 Pokémon, so keep enough of them to ensure you have good starting cards. This is exactly what you need to do!
  8. 8 Put as many Trainer and Support cards as possible in your deck. With their help, you can get from the deck the very card that you need at one time or another. Do not forget about the draw cards - some will give you an advantage and allow you to replenish your supply of cards. Finally, don't forget the EX cards, as they are stronger than most Pokémon base cards and have useful abilities.
  9. 9 Don't take too many evolution cards. Most decks nowadays use EX cards to gain early dominance over the enemy. There are, however, exceptions - Pyroar and Ilektrik. Remember, the longer you prepare your Pokémon for evolution, the more time your opponent has to prepare a counter attack.

Tips

  • Trainer cards will come in handy, allowing you to reuse other Trainer cards.
  • Find a league if you haven't already. This way you can test your decks, trade profitably, and even make new friends.
  • Store your cards and deck so as not to lose them and not be ashamed of their appearance during the game.
  • When choosing a deck, keep in mind that Pokémon with strong attack alone will not win the game.
  • Store cards that you don't need. You may think that they are useless, but for other players they can be a real treasure.
  • Keep in mind that Basic Pokémon are quite normal cards. When building a deck, you will need to draw a sufficient number of such cards.
  • Do not forget about the ratio of damage dealt to energy expended. Choose Pokémon that hit hard (or help the team well), but spend little energy.
  • Use Pokémon and Trainer cards that complement each other. For example, if you want to use a tanking Pokémon that replenishes health whenever it spends energy. Then you need trainers with healing skills and, in fact, Pokémon.
  • Remember that there can only be 60 cards in a deck. No more and no less - 60.
  • Your deck should have at least one evolution card with a good attack. Why? Pyroar in the 2015 metagame was the biggest threat - for basic Pokémon, he was an impenetrable wall.
