Drying with a hard and rough towel is still a pleasure. There is nothing strange in the fact that oils, dirt and various chemicals will eat into the fabric, because of which it coarsens and does not wrinkle well. This could be due to your laundry detergent, washing method, or even water supply, but there are a few things you can do to fix it. Read on to find out how to soften hard towels!

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Washing and Soaking

1. 1 Wash towels in warm or hot water. The warmer the water, the better it absorbs the detergent and the less it will remain on the fabric. What's more, hot water will help dissolve oils left on the towels after contact with hygiene products and skin.
   • Please note that repeated washing in hot water may dull bright colors on the towel. If you don't care, then you can safely wash in hot water. If you want to preserve the color, wash in cold water and try other ways to soften your towels.
2. 2 Soak towels in fabric softener. Mix 240 ml of fabric softener with enough hot water to completely submerge the towels. Soak the towels in the solution for at least an hour to allow the fabric softener to thoroughly soak.
3. 3 Replace laundry detergent and fabric softener with vinegar. Most commercial fabric softeners contain silicon, which can coat the surface of your towels and reduce their absorbency. Add an extra rinse cycle when washing towels in the washing machine, and in the first cycle use 120 ml of white vinegar instead of detergent. The vinegar will remove oils and soap residues that make your towel stiff, making it fluffier and more absorbent. Use a mild cleaner (or plain water) in the second rinse to remove the vinegar smell while keeping the fabric soft.
4. 4 Use baking soda. Try adding 60 grams of baking soda to your regular laundry detergent. This will wash away any oils, dirt, and chemicals that can make the towel rough and rough. Also, baking soda is great for removing the musty smell that appears when the towel is damp for a long time.

Method 2 of 3: Drying Methods

1. 1 Air dry the towels. It is best if the weather is cool and there is a light breeze outside. When the towel is dry, knead it with your hands like a piece of meat or dough. This should reduce the stiffness.
2. 2 Tumble dry at low power. The heat will certainly make your towels fluffier, but it can also compromise the integrity of the fabric. You can alternate between air drying and dryer. Try drying towels partially on a clothesline and then drying them in a tumble dryer to keep them warm and fluffy.
   • After finishing drying, start another cycle, only now select the "no crease" mode, if available. This mode should fluff up the towel and soften the fabric.
3. 3 Shake the towels. Shake the towels well after washing and after drying. This will give the fabric a fluffy appearance.
4. 4 Place laundry balls or tennis balls in the washing machine. If you choose to tumble dry your towels, load a couple of clean tennis balls or laundry balls with them. During the drying cycle, the balls will dangle inside the drum and whisk your towels. This should soften the fibers and soften tough areas.

Method 3 of 3: How to prevent the towels from getting hard

1. 1 Use less detergent. Laundry detergents are highly concentrated, so even a small amount should be sufficient. If you use too much of the product, the residues can stick into the fabric, making it stiff and rough. Use less detergent than usual.
   • Leaving too much detergent on the fabric can also promote the growth of mold and bacteria, especially if the towel is damp.
2. 2 Do not overload the washing machine. If the drum is full, your towels will not rinse properly. The fabric will be tough and will leave residues of minerals, dirt and detergents.
   • The same goes for drying! Be patient and do a few cycles to avoid overfilling the tumble dryer.
3. 3 Beware of hard water. If the water in your home is hard and contains many minerals, the water in the faucet or washing machine can leave limescale deposits on the towels. Buy a mineral filter to soften the water, or wash towels in non-tap water.

Warnings

• Remember, the longer the towels are soaked in the fabric softener, the softer and softer they will become. But if the towel is soaked for too long, it can ruin the fabric.
