Moving your personal data from one computer to another can be a time consuming process. There is always the possibility of missing an important folder or file. This also applies to copying Internet Explorer bookmarks known as Favorites. Recreating them in IE can be very tedious, so copy the bookmarks from one computer to another to ensure data integrity.

Steps

  1. 1 Start Internet Explorer.
  2. 2 Click Favorites (the button is marked with a yellow star), and then click the arrow next to the Add to Favorites button.
  3. 3 Select Import and Export from the menu.
    • The Import / Export Options window opens.
  4. 4 Check "Export to file" and click "Next".
    • Select what to export (Favorites) and then click Next again.
  5. 5 Select the folder containing the bookmarks you want to copy and click Next.
  6. 6 Specify a location to export bookmarks and click Export.
    • You can copy bookmarks to a USB flash drive or external drive, save them to a network folder, or send them to your email address.
  7. 7 Complete the export process by clicking Finish.
  8. 8 Connect a USB flash drive or external hard drive to the USB port (or go to your mailbox) and copy the exported bookmarks.

Tips

  • You can also import bookmarks from another browser on the same computer. Follow the instructions and make your selection when prompted.
  • You can also export feeds and newsgroups from one IE to another.

Warnings

  • You can't just copy the Favorites folder from the My Documents folder from one computer to another. You must export the bookmarks to an HTML file and then import them into IE on the new computer.
