If you want to convert a MIDI file to MP3 format without using special conversion software, then you can do it yourself using the free audio editor, Audacity. Audacity is a robust, powerful open source audio recorder and editor that's capable of much more than a free program would expect.

Steps

1. 1 Start Audacity. You can download the program from SourceForge.net
2. 2 Enter the source and exit details. In your MIDI or DAW recorder, check where the audio is being recorded. The Audacity source must match the output of your MIDI recorder.
   • You can check the MIDI output of the recorder in the app settings.
   • In Audacity, choose from the options dropdown next to the microphone icon.
3. 3 Select the mix of the output. Select mono or stereo from the drop-down menu next to the speaker icon.
4. 4 Check the levels. Set Audacity to Record Ready mode by clicking on Pause (two vertical blue lines), then clicking on Record (red dot). Play the MIDI file, and in Audacity, set the input level (the slider next to the microphone) so that the level meters very rarely go to 0.
5. 5 Record your music. When you are happy with the set levels, scroll to the beginning of the MIDI file, click the Record button, then click the Play button for the MIDI file. You should see audio waves in the Audacity track.
6. 6 Stop recording. When the song is over, press the yellow Stop button in Audacity, and then click on the Stop button in the MIDI playback software.
7. 7 Check your file. Press the green Play button in Audacity, and listen to your song to check the quality of the recording.
8. 8 Export your song. From the menu File, select Export ... ", and in the export window, name your file, and select MP3 Files from the dropdown menu.
   • Also, you can choose WAV, AIFF, WMA, and other formats - choose the one that suits you.
9. 9 Enjoy your new file!

Tips

• This method is cheaper and easier than buying dedicated MIDI to MP3 conversion software.
• Many other software products (besides Audacity) have similar functions, if you already have a similar program then try it.

Warnings

• With large files, Audacity will take a long time to export, and you may feel that the program is frozen. Be patient.
• Make sure you are not breaking the law with the new MP3 file.
