People often use PDFs because they retain the original content of the document, but this makes them much more difficult to separate than other document formats. If you have Adobe Acrobat, use the built-in Split Document feature. If you don't want to spend money on Acrobat, use free programs to split the document.

Steps

Method 1 of 5: Google Chrome

  1. 1 Open the PDF file in Google Chrome. To do this, drag the PDF file into an open Chrome window.
    • Alternatively, right-click the PDF file, select Open With, and then select Google Chrome from the list of available programs.
    • If the browser does not open the PDF file, enter in the address bar of the browser chrome: // plugins /and then click on the "Enable" link under the "Chrome PDF Viewer" add-on.
  2. 2 Click on the "Print" button. This is one of the buttons that appear when you hover your cursor over the lower-right corner of the browser window.
  3. 3 In the "Printer" section, click the button.Change.
  4. 4 Under Local Destinations, select Save as PDF.
  5. 5 Enter the range of pages from which you want to compose the new document.
    • Let's say you have a 10-page PDF that you want to split, keeping the first 7 pages in one file and the last 3 in another. To create a PDF from the first 7 pages, enter "1-7" in the "Pages" section. Then repeat the process to create a second document.
  6. 6 Click "Save" and enter a name for the file. Then choose where to save the file.
  7. 7 Repeat the process to create a second document. Thus, you can create two (or more) new documents from the source.
    • Let's say after the first split, you've created a new document with seven pages, and now you want to create another document with the last three pages. To do this, reopen the original file, go to the print section and enter "8-10" as the page range. After that, you will have two new documents: one with the first seven pages and the second with the last three.

Method 2 of 5: PDFSplit! (online)

  1. 1 Go in your browser to.splitpdf.com... This site is one of many online PDF splitting tools, but also one of the most reliable and popular.
    • If you want to share a personal or confidential document, click on the "Secure Connection" link on the main page.
    • If the document contains confidential information, we recommend using one of the offline methods described in the article.
  2. 2 Drag the selected PDF file to the "select file" field. If all else fails, click on the "My Computer" link and locate the file on your computer.
    • PDF files stored on Google Drive or Dropbox can also be split.
  3. 3 Enter the page range for the first new document.
    • Let's say you have a 12-page PDF file that you want to split, keeping the first 5 pages in the first file and the last 7 in the second. To create a PDF with the first 5 pages, enter "1-5" in the Pages section.
  4. 4 To create a second document, click on the "Advanced" link. This way, you can quickly split a document into two new ones without repeating the splitting process.
    • For example, after you enter "1-7" in the first row, enter "8-12" in the second. When you confirm the split, the site will create two new files at the same time.
  5. 5 Click on the "Individual name of the split files" field. In this way, you can enter a title for each new split document.
  6. 6 When you're ready to start, click on the button.Divide!. Your new split documents will be automatically downloaded in ZIP format. All created documents will be in a ZIP archive.
    • Double click on the downloaded zip file to display the documents it contains.

Method 3 of 5: View (OS X)

  1. 1 Open the PDF file in the Preview application. Viewer is a standard application on Mac computers that can perform many basic tasks without installing additional software.
    • If the PDF file does not open automatically in Preview, right-click on the desired file and select Open With → Preview.
    • Splitting a document in Preview takes much longer than working with an online tool or Google Chrome. Therefore, if you are in a hurry, give preference to the first two methods.
  2. 2 Click on the "View" menu and select "Thumbnails" to display a list of all pages in the PDF file.
  3. 3 Move the pages you want to split to the desktop. When you move a page from the Thumbnails frame to the desktop, you create a new PDF file containing that page. Repeat this for each page you want to split.
    • For example, if you have a PDF file of 8 pages and you only want to create a new file from the first four, drag all four pages to the desktop.
  4. 4 Open the first page of the new PDF in Preview. Now that you have split the pages, you need to combine them into a single PDF file.
    • When opening the PDF, make sure Thumbnail view is turned on.
  5. 5 Move each page to the thumbnail window in the order in which you want to compose them. Drag each page from the desktop to the thumbnail window. Move them in the order in which they should go.
  6. 6 Click File → Save to save the new merged file as PDF. The new file will contain all the pages that you extracted from the original PDF.

Method 4 of 5: CutePDF (Windows)

  1. 1 Download the CutePDF program. Unlike OS X, Windows does not have a standard program for working with PDF files. CutePDF is a free program that can split PDF files easily in any program that can open them.
    • Go to cutepdf.com/products/cutepdf/writer.asp and click on "Free Download" and "Free Converter".
    • If you need to split a single file, go with Google Chrome or the online tool as they are faster. This method is ideal for those who need to split a lot of PDF files.
  2. 2 Run "CuteWriter.exe" to install the program. Unlike most freeware programs, during the installation process, CuteWriter will try to install an adware application. Click on the Cancel button in the first window, and then click on the "Skip this and all remaining Skip this and all remaining" link.
  3. 3 Run the "converter.exe" program to install the files required for CutePDF. Click on the Setup button to install everything automatically. Unlike "CuteWriter.exe", don't worry about installing adware in this step.
  4. 4 Open the PDF file you want to split. CutePDF works in any program, so open the file in Adobe Reader or in your browser.
  5. 5 Open the Print menu. To do this, just select "File" → "Print" or click Ctrl+P on keyboard.
  6. 6 Select "CutePDF Writer" from the list of available printers. CutePDF acts like a virtual printer, but instead of printing the document, it creates a PDF file.
  7. 7 Enter the range of pages from which you want to compose the new document. This will create a new document from the selected pages.
  8. 8 Click on the button.Sealto save the new file. You will be asked to name the file and choose a location to save.
    • Repeat the process if you want to split the original file into multiple new documents.

Method 5 of 5: Adobe Acrobat

  1. 1 Open the PDF you want to split in Adobe Acrobat. If you have a paid version of Adobe Acrobat installed on your computer, use it to split files. The free version of Adobe Reader does not split files, so use one of the above methods from this article.
  2. 2 Click on the "Tools" button on the left side of the window. This will open the toolbar.
  3. 3 Expand the Organize Pages section of the toolbar.
  4. 4 Click on the "Divide" button.
  5. 5 Specify the maximum number of pages in each new file. The program can divide the document into a specified number of pages. For example, entering the number 3 will split the document into separate files of 3 pages each.
    • You can also split the document by bookmarks or by maximum file size.
  6. 6 Click on the button.Output optionsto select a location to save the file. If you want, save the new document in the same folder as the original file, or choose a new folder. Here you can also specify the name of the new files.
  7. 7 Click on the button.OKto split the file. The new files will be placed in the folder you specified in the previous step.
