Wearing jeans that are too tight is uncomfortable and difficult. Fortunately, there are several different ways you can stretch them! If you are able to put on jeans, but they make you uncomfortable, try doing a few squats to improve their fit. Alternatively, heat the jeans with a hairdryer before putting them on and then pull them out to the sides where you are cramped. To stretch jeans about 2.5 cm wide at the waist, buttocks, thighs and calves, or just about 2.5 cm in length, dampen them with lukewarm water, and then pull the fabric in the desired direction.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Do a few squats to stretch your jeans a little

  1. 1 Put on jeans. To use this method and stretch the jeans at the waist, buttocks and hips, you must be able to put them on (despite the tightness). Be sure to button up your jeans before proceeding.
  2. 2 Squat at least 1 minute. Stand up straight and place your feet shoulder-width apart. Then begin to lower your hips and buttocks down, bending your knees (imagine sitting in a chair). Be careful not to let your knees protrude beyond your toes. To get out of the squat, push off the floor with your heels and rise to the starting position. Repeat the squat for at least one minute.
    • Squats can be done for up to five minutes in a row, but this can make your muscles ache. The longer you squat, the better the denim will stretch.

Alternative exercise: lunges can be done to stretch the jeans in the hips and buttocks, but it is best if this exercise is added to the squat, as it alone does not significantly stretch the tissue.

  3. 3 See if your jeans feel more comfortable after exercise. Take a walk, sit down and stand up to see if you feel comfortable. You should notice that the jeans are not so tight on the body anymore. However, they can still feel cramped if they are too small for you.
    • If the jeans are still uncomfortable, you can try heating them to provide a stronger stretch.

Method 2 of 3: Heat the denim to a moderate stretch

  1. 1 Place your jeans on the floor or bed. Find a spot for your jeans that is close to an electrical outlet. Then fold the jeans face up to full length. Spread them out to help you heat the fabric evenly.
    • The bed is usually cleaner than the floor, so if you have an outlet next to your bed, it is best to place your jeans on the bed rather than on the floor.
  2. 2 Set the hair dryer to a medium temperature and heat the jeans with it. Keep the hair dryer about 15 cm away from the fabric. While heating your jeans, move the hair dryer constantly to distribute the heat evenly. After warming the front side, flip the jeans over and heat the back.
    • It is not necessary to warm up both sides of the garment, but it will allow you to stretch the jeans more.
  3. 3 Stretch the jeans to the sides with your hands. With both hands, grasp the opposite edges of the tight section of the jeans and pull as hard as you can to the sides to stretch the fabric. Move up and down the tight area to stretch any areas of the fabric that need it. You can also insert both hands into jeans at once and pull the fabric to the sides around the waist, buttocks, thighs and calves, which will also help to stretch it.
    • For example, if you need to stretch your jeans at the hips, grasp the thighs of the leg with your hands from opposite sides. Then pull the fabric to the sides. This will allow you to expand your pant leg.
    • To increase the waist, it will be easier to unbutton the jeans and insert both bent elbows inside the waist section. After that, simply spread your elbows apart to stretch the fabric around your waist.
    • If your jeans start to cool before you finish stretching the fabric, heat them up again with a blow dryer.
  4. 4 Put your jeans on. Remember to close the zipper and button before continuing to stretch the fabric. At this point, the jeans will already be a little more comfortable, but may still be tight.
    • If you have difficulty buttoning your jeans, lie on your bed and try buttoning them while lying down.
    • Next, start doing squats or lunges for 1-5 minutes to stretch the denim more.

Method 3 of 3: Dampen denim for strong stretch

  1. 1 Spread your jeans on the floor. Use the surface of the floor, not the bed, so as not to accidentally wet the bed. Spread out your jeans on the floor to help you moisturize the fabric.
    • Denim dye can stain when you wet the fabric, so it is helpful to place a trash bag or old towels underneath your jeans before proceeding.
    • If you plan on stretching your jeans at the waist, open them so that you don't accidentally pull out the button.

Alternative approach: You can also wear jeans on yourself and then wet them to make them fit better. However, you will feel uncomfortable walking in wet jeans, and you must be able to put them on to take advantage of this approach.

  2. 2 Use a spray bottle to dampen your jeans with room temperature water. Use a spray bottle with water to moisten a small area of the fabric. The fabric should be exactly damp to the touch, but not wet. Work from the waist down and gradually work downward, consistently moisturizing specific areas of the fabric.
    • If your denim doesn't stretch well, you can try re-wetting it. Use additional water as needed as you stretch the jeans further.
    • If you have a liquid fabric conditioner, add about one teaspoon (5 ml) of fabric conditioner to a spray bottle of water before dampening your jeans. This will soften the fabric so that it stretches better.
  3. 3 Stand on one edge of the jeans to secure them in place. Place your foot on the edge of the area you want to stretch. This will press the jeans to the floor so that you can stretch them more comfortably.
    • For example, if you need to stretch your jeans at the waist, step on their belt. If you need to stretch your hips, stand on the edge of your pant leg.
    • The best way to get the job done is to wear socks or stay barefoot. Shoes can stain your jeans with dirt and pathogens.
  4. 4 Pull the wet jeans with your hands to stretch the fabric. Bend down, grab the opposite edge of the stretch area with both hands, and pull the fabric upward with all your strength. Perform the procedure on all areas of the jeans that need to be stretched. If you were first stretching one leg and finishing with it, move on to the second leg. If you find it easier to stretch the fabric with your hands with all your strength in opposite directions, do so.
    • If the jeans are too tight in all areas, stretch them wide from the waist. Gradually work your way up to the buttocks, crotch, and thighs.
    • If the jeans are too short, it is best to stretch the leg length. Try starting at mid-leg level.
    • Do not pull on the jeans by the belt loops or pockets, as these are weak areas where the fabric can tear.
  5. 5 Let your jeans dry before putting them on. Hang the jeans on a clothesline to dry, lay them out on a table, or sling them over the back of a chair. Let them dry naturally for at least 2-3 hours. However, it is best to leave them to dry overnight.
    • The drying time depends on how much you wet the jeans before.
    • If you decide to lay your jeans to dry on a table or hang them on a chair, it is better to place a plastic bag underneath them to protect the furniture from unwanted staining in case the fabric dye begins to fade.

Tips

  • To keep your jeans stretched, do not tumble dry. Let them dry naturally. Alternatively, skip the wash and just put your jeans in the freezer for a few hours to freshen them up.
  • If you are unable to pull your jeans over your hips, then you will not be able to stretch them to the extent that you feel comfortable in them. The above stretching methods are best suited for applications where the fabric needs to be stretched as little as 2.5 cm.

Warnings

  • While some advise taking a warm bath in your jeans to stretch them, this is not a good idea. Firstly, it is inconvenient, and secondly, this approach will not allow you to stretch your jeans more than with regular moisturizing from a spray bottle.
  • Be careful not to place wet jeans on light-colored rugs or towels. The blue textile paint used to paint denim can easily stain carpets and other textiles.
