Roborovsky hamsters, or dwarf hamsters, are tiny, but very active and playful animals. If you want to tame a dwarf hamster, you will need to devote a lot of time to the pet and be patient. Roborovsky hamsters live well in small groups or pairs, but if you notice that your pets are hostile towards each other, put them in separate cages.

Steps

  1. 1 Let your hamster settle into a new place. If you've just brought your hamster home, put it in the cage and leave it alone. Feed your pet regularly, but do not bother him with communication. If you scare the hamster from the very beginning and your presence is associated with danger in the animal, it will be much more difficult for you to tame the pet.
  2. 2 Train your hamster to hear your voice. Sit next to the cage, try not to move, and speak in a low, confident and joyful voice about anything. You can hum melodic songs quietly, but do not get carried away: a high note can ruin everything.
  3. 3 Offer the fluffy toddler a treat. Take a piece of hamster treat in your hand and bring it to a part of the cage where your pet can smell a delicious scent without ever leaving its hiding place. Wait five to ten minutes - perhaps during this time the hamster will gain courage, come up to you and take a treat. If it doesn't, remove the rejected treat from the cage and put a small piece of something tasty in the bowl. Repeat this step daily.
  4. 4 If the hamster dares to approach you, place the treat in your palm.
  5. 5 When your pet climbs onto the palm to pick up the treat, raise your hand slightly above the floor of the cage. Most likely, the hamster will immediately jump down.
  6. 6 Gently hold the hand with the hamster sitting on it at a safe height and offer the animal another piece of food. Skip to this step if your pet is used to sitting in the palm of your hand and won't jump off. Choose a location for this exercise where the hamster cannot run and hide.
  7. 7 Pet your hamster gently while it eats the treat.
  8. 8 Invite the hamster to move to the palm of the other hand. Try this when your pet is already used to you and agrees to be stroked even without reward with a treat. After you play with your pet, you need to treat him with something tasty.

Tips

  • If the hamster does something inappropriate, for example, gnaws at the sleeve of your shirt, calmly but firmly say: "You can't!" If your pet has stopped playing pranks, treat him with something tasty. Never yell at your hamster, otherwise he will be afraid of you.
  • Some treats can only be given in small amounts. For example, if you are providing sunflower seeds (seeds), just a couple of seeds per day is enough.
  • You should not feed Roborovsky's hamster with treats containing sugar: these animals are prone to diabetes.
  • You cannot bring your hand from above and grab the hamster: this is how hawks grab their prey with their claws in the wild.
  • Your confidence is the key to successful domestication. If you are afraid of your hamster, he will also be afraid of you.

Warnings

  • It will take you a lot of time to tame the Roborovsky hamster - from several weeks to several months. Be patient and persistent.
  • Dwarf hamsters are very agile. If you have recently tamed your hamster, resist the temptation to put it on your knee - most likely, the pet will get away from you forever.
  • The hamster can bite you. If this happens, put your pet back in the crate and do not give him treats this time. Rinse the bite site and cover with tape.

What do you need
