There are many different variations of syrup that can be made, and many are prepared with a very simple formula. You can make syrups to add to milk or other drinks or syrups that can be added to breakfasts and desserts. You can even make your own version of corn syrup. Here are some ideas to consider.

Ingredients

Simple syrup

For 2 cups (500 ml) syrup

  • 1 cup (250 ml) granulated sugar
  • 1 cup (250 ml) water

Flavored Milk Syrup

For 3 cups (750 ml) syrup

  • 2 cups (500 ml) granulated sugar
  • 1 cup (250 ml) water
  • 2.5 gr. unsweetened fruit drink

Corn syrup

For 3 cups (750 ml) syrup

  • 235 ml. corn on the cob
  • 2.5 cups (625 ml) water
  • 450 gr. granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp (5 ml) salt
  • 1/2 vanilla pod

Steps

Method 1 of 4: Simple Syrup

  1. 1 Mix water and sugar. Stir the sugar and water in a small, high-sided saucepan. Place the saucepan on the stove over medium heat.
    • Use cold water.
    • The ratio of ingredients in this recipe will create a thick syrup suitable for cold fruit drinks, cocktails, and candied fruits.
    • To make a medium-thick syrup for use in iced tea and hot drinks, increase the ratio: two parts water to one part sugar.
    • For liquid syrup used as a frosting for desserts, change the ratio to three parts water and one part sugar.
  2. 2 Bring the mixture to a boil. Stir the mixture when it starts to boil to dissolve the sugar.
    • Use a moderate to high cooking temperature and stir with a wooden or plastic spoon.
    • It takes 3-5 minutes for the mixture to boil.
    • Spoon a small amount of syrup with a spoon and check to see if the sugar has dissolved. If you see sugar crystals, continue boiling the syrup.
  3. 3 Reduce heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
    • If you want to make a flavored syrup, add the seasoning while the syrup is boiling. Liquid ingredients such as fresh lime or lemon juice can be added directly to the syrup and mixed. Solid ingredients such as orange peels, mint stalks, and cinnamon sticks should be tied in a bunch with a string of cheesecloth and dipped in the syrup as it boils.
  4. 4 Let the mixture cool. Remove the syrup from heat and let it cool to room temperature.
    • Do not refrigerate the syrup at this stage of cooling. Let it cool down at room temperature.
  5. 5 Use immediately or save. You can add your recipe syrup right away or pour it into a container, cover and refrigerate for later use.
    • The syrup can be kept in the refrigerator for one to six months.

Method 2 of 4: Flavored Milk Syrup

  1. 1 Mix sugar with water. Stir the sugar and water in a small saucepan. Place the mixture over medium heat.
    • Use cold water.
    • Make sure the sides of the pot are high to prevent the syrup from running.
  2. 2 Boil the mixture for 30-60 seconds. Let the mixture boil. After boiling, let the mixture simmer for 1 minute.
    • Simmer the mixture over medium heat, stirring frequently, to dissolve the sugar.
    • Make sure the sugar is dissolved before removing the syrup from the heat. If there are still sugar crystals in the syrup, then it should still boil.
  3. 3 Let cool. Remove the syrup from the stove and let it cool to room temperature.
    • Let it cool at room temperature. Do not refrigerate the syrup just yet.
  4. 4 Mix syrup and dry powder. Once the syrup has cooled to room temperature, mix it with the packet of unsweetened fruit drink mix until smooth.
    • You can use any flavor you like. Since the powder is intended to dissolve in drinks, add a small amount so that there is no problem when you dissolve it in the syrup.
  5. 5 Add to milk. Add 1 tbsp. l. (15 ml.) Flavored syrup in 250 ml. cold milk. Add more or less syrup as desired.
    • Any leftover syrup can be stored in a sealed jar in the refrigerator for up to one month.

Method 3 of 4: Corn Syrup

  1. 1 Cut the corn into pieces. Use a sharp kitchen knife to cut a fresh ear of corn into 1-inch pieces.
    • This can be quite difficult and you will have to use a large, sharp knife to do the job. When cutting, lean over the knife to apply more mass and pressure to the knife. Just be careful not to cut yourself in the process.
    • Only corn flavor optional. Store-bought corn syrup does not taste like corn, so if you want something that looks like a store-bought corn syrup, skip the corn steps and use 1.25 cups (310 ml) water instead of the amount above. The rest of the ingredients and steps will remain the same.
  2. 2 Bring corn to a boil over high heat. Add corn and cold water to a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil.
    • Use cold water.
  3. 3 Reduce heat and let it simmer. Once the water boils, reduce the heat to medium and let the water simmer slowly. Let the corn cook for 30 minutes.
    • Do not remove the lid from the pot.
    • When done, the water level has evaporated by half.
  4. 4 Drain the water. Pour the water and corn into a colander. Pour back into the pot the water in which the corn was boiled.
    • You can use the corn in other recipes or just throw it away.
  5. 5 Add sugar and salt to the water in which the corn was boiled. Stir sugar and salt in this broth until completely dissolved.
  6. 6 Add vanilla to the mixture. Scrape the vanilla seeds out of the pod and add them to the pot.
    • For an even stronger vanilla flavor, add the pod to the syrup.
    • If you don't have a vanilla stick, then 1 tsp can be used. (5 ml) vanilla extract.
  7. 7 Simmer the mixture over low heat for 30-60 minutes. Let the mixture simmer on a low heat until all the sugar has dissolved and the mixture thickens.
    • When the process is complete, the mixture should be thick enough to stick to the spoon.
  8. 8 Let the mixture cool. Let the corn syrup cool at room temperature.
    • Do not refrigerate the corn syrup at this stage.
  9. 9 Use immediately or store in the refrigerator. You can use corn syrup right away, or you can store it in the refrigerator in a sealed container for several months.
    • Store the vanilla stick corn syrup.
    • If the syrup begins to crystallize over time, place it in the microwave with a drop of warm water. Stir to dissolve crystals, then use as usual.

Method 4 of 4: Additional Syrup Recipes

  1. 1 A simple vanilla-flavored syrup. You can add vanilla sticks or vanilla extract to a simple syrup recipe to create a syrup more suitable for dessert dishes.
  2. 2 Make a ginger-flavored syrup. Adding chopped ginger to a simple syrup will create a delicious, savory syrup worth adding to soda or hot tea.
  3. 3 Make fruit syrup. Most fruit syrups are fairly easy to prepare. Add fruit juice or jam to the main syrup when simmering.
    • Try making sweet strawberry syrup. Fresh strawberries, water and sugar combine to form a syrup that is worth adding to pancakes, waffles, ice cream, and a range of other desserts.
    • Make lemon syrup to add to drinks or food. Lemon syrup can be made with fresh lemons, sugar, and water. You can also make a syrup using wine vinegar.
    • Instead of lemon syrup, make lime syrup. To make lime syrup, add freshly squeezed lime juice to plain syrup.
    • Make blueberry syrup. Add blueberries to plain syrup. It can be used in breakfast and desserts.
    • Make apricot syrup. Ripe apricots, cointreau, lemon juice, and sugar can be mixed to make a flavorful, gourmet syrup that can be used for baking, cooking, and preparing drinks.
    • Make cherry syrup. Sweet, pungent cherry syrup can be made using sugar, lemon juice, orange juice, vanilla sticks, and fresh cherries.
    • Create a flavorful, unique fig syrup. Simmer the figs in cognac or sherry long enough to remove the alcohol. Then add to the thick syrup.
    • Make a great grape syrup. The grapes can be combined with light corn syrup and sugar - an unusual syrup made with familiar flavors.
  4. 4 Use edible flowers to create a sweet, aromatic syrup. There are several colors you can add to your syrup.
    • Try making rose syrup or rose and cardamom syrup. These syrups can be prepared with rose water, rose essence and natural rose petals.
    • Alternatively, you can make violet syrup from fresh natural violets.
  5. 5 Collect authentic maple syrup from nearby maple trees. The process requires you to collect and filter the maple sap. The juice then goes through a boiling process to turn it into syrup.
    • Alternatively, prepare a batch of artificial maple syrup using maple flavor or extract.
  6. 6 Try mixing some coffee with syrup. By adding strong brewed coffee, rum, or orange juice to a simple syrup, you can create a syrup with a rich, deep aroma, making it the perfect addition to cake or milk.
  7. 7 Make chocolate syrup. Unsweetened cocoa can turn plain syrup into a delicious addition to milk or ice cream.
  8. 8 Use tea leaves to make iced tea syrup. By adding tea leaves to syrup, you can create a sweet iced tea without muffling the aroma of the tea.
  9. 9 Prepare a scorching syrup. This specialized syrup is a key ingredient in the beverage known as Mai Tai and can be made with almond flour, sugar, vodka, water and rose water.
  10. 10 Serve homemade spiced cider syrup. This syrup makes an interesting alternative to maple syrup and can be served with French toast, pancakes, or waffles. It gets its flavor from apple cider, sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg.
