Zip sweatshirts are great for cooler days, but they can be tricky to wash. Don't spoil your favorite sweatshirt with a wash! Spend a little extra time caring for your sweatshirt to keep the fabric and zipper in top condition.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Using the washing machine

  1. 1 Wash your sweatshirt after every 6-7 wears. Before washing your sweatshirt, determine if it is necessary. It is recommended to wash sweatshirts after about six or seven wears because outerwear does not get dirty as quickly. Washing less frequently also prevents additional wear and tear. If the sweatshirt does not smell, you can postpone the wash for a while.
    • If you train in a sweatshirt, you will likely need to wash it more often.
    • If you doubt its cleanliness, it is best to wash it. Worrying about a dirty sweatshirt shouldn't darken your day.
    • Think about what you are wearing under the hoodie. The more layers of clothing you wear, the less sweat will be deposited on the sweatshirt.
  2. 2 Zip up sweatshirt. Zip up to protect the links and keep the sweatshirt easy to open and close. This will also prevent the fabric from snagging on the exposed zipper.
  3. 3 Fasten the zipper. Use a safety pin to keep the zipper from coming apart during washing.
    • Pull the metal slider up to the collar of your sweatshirt.
    • Pass the open side of the pin through the hole in the slider.
    • Pierce the fabric with a pin.
    • Close the pin.
  4. 4 Turn your hoodie inside out. If you want your sweatshirt to stay soft and vibrant, it should be turned inside out before washing to protect the color and texture of the fabric during washing.
  5. 5 Put the sweatshirt in washing machine. Unfold the hoodie and place it in the drum of the washing machine, being careful not to wrinkle it.
  6. 6 Set a gentle cycle on your washing machine. Use a gentle wash cycle to reduce wear on your sweatshirt and zipper.
  7. 7 Wash your sweatshirt in cold water. Switch the washing machine to cold water before turning it on so as not to spoil the color and images on the sweatshirt.
  8. 8 Add a mild detergent. When water starts filling the washing machine, add the detergent. Use a mild detergent on your clothes, avoiding products containing bleach.
  9. 9 Avoid fabric softeners. Liquid fabric softener and antistatic agents can damage your sweatshirt.Fabric softeners can damage some fabrics (for example, waterproof fabrics). When you wash your sweatshirt, you don't need to complicate anything.
  10. 10 Caress twice. The peculiarity of sweatshirts is such that it is difficult to wash out of them the detergent. Rinse your sweatshirt twice to avoid any detergent left on your sweatshirt.
  11. 11 Dry the sweatshirt for clothesline or in a dryer at low temperature. High temperatures can ruin the zipper, so tumble dry at low temperatures if you don't have time to wait for it to air dry.

Method 2 of 2: Hand wash

  1. 1 Close the zipper. Prepare the sweatshirt for washing by closing the zipper to prevent it from snagging on the fabric. It will also prevent damage to the lightning links.
  2. 2 Find a large container. When hand washing, you will need something roomy to hold enough water to wash your clothes. This can be a sink, a bucket, or a large saucepan.
  3. 3 Add a mild detergent to the water. After filling the container with water, add the detergent. Stir the soapy water gently to dissolve the soap.
    • Do not add too much detergent. As much as you want your sweatshirt to be clean again, keep in mind that the excess will be difficult to wash. In addition, excess detergent attracts dirt and bacteria and traps them in the fabric.
    • Remember that detergent is meant to be fully loaded, so do not measure out a full cup of detergent. A teaspoon is recommended for small items. If you have a thick sweatshirt, add a little more.
  4. 4 Submerge the sweatshirt. Dip the sweatshirt in water as soon as you stir the detergent. Press down on it with your hand until the entire sweatshirt is under the water.
  5. 5 Soak your sweatshirt. Leave the sweatshirt in a container of soapy water for a few minutes to absorb the detergent.
  6. 6 Knead it with your hands. Mash the hoodie gently in a container of soapy water. Try not to rub the fabric to avoid damaging it.
  7. 7 Remove the sweatshirt from the soapy water. Remove the hoodie from the container and gently squeeze out some excess water. Do not twist the sweatshirt as this may damage it.
  8. 8 Place the hoodie in a colander. Use a colander to rinse the soap off your sweatshirt without damaging the fabric.
    • A colander is a bowl with holes to drain off water. If you don't have a colander, check one of the pots to see if there is a basket for steaming vegetables.
    • If you don't have the right kitchen utensils, use a large funnel.
  9. 9 Rinse your hoodie. Rinse the hoodie in a colander with cold water to rinse out the detergent.
    • If you can't find anything to rinse your sweatshirt with, just fill the wash container with clean water and rinse it out there.
    • Make sure you wash all the detergent by sniffing the fabric. If you smell a strong detergent smell, rinse the hoodie again.
  10. 10 Squeeze out the water. Gently squeeze the hoodie to remove excess water. Do not twist the sweatshirt to avoid damaging the fabric.
  11. 11 Lay the sweatshirt to dry. Please note that after hand washing, garments usually take longer to dry because they retain more water. Find a level surface that will not be harmed by dripping water, such as a countertop.

Warnings

  • If the zipper is made of metal, it may still be hot after the dryer.
