This article will show you how to turn off iPad completely, rather than just dim the screen of your device.
Steps
Method 1 of 3: Using the Power Button
1 Find the Sleep / Wake button. This oval button is located on the right side of the top panel (if you hold the device with the screen facing you).
2 Press and hold the Sleep / Wake button. Hold it down for a few seconds.
3 Release the Sleep / Wake button. Do this as soon as the "Turn off" option appears at the top of the screen.
- If the specified button does not work, use this method.
4 Swipe the "Disable" option to the right. The iPad shutdown process will start.
5 Wait until the iPad screen goes blank (black). This means that the device has turned off.
Method 2 of 3: Using the Settings app
1 Launch the Settings app
. Click on the gray gears icon. It's on one of the desktops or the Dock.
2 Tap "General"
. It's on the left side of the screen.
3 Click on Switch off. You will find this option in the middle of the screen.
- Depending on the iPad screen size, you may have to scroll down the page to find this option.
4 Swipe the "Disable" option to the right. It will be displayed at the top of the screen.
5 Wait until the iPad screen goes blank (black). This means that the device has turned off.
Method 3 of 3: How to Force Shut Down iPad
1 Know when to use this method. Force restart iPad if the device is frozen or unresponsive to pressing the Sleep / Wake button.
- Forcing iPad to restart may cause some apps to crash; unsaved changes may also be lost.
2 Find the Sleep / Wake button. This oval button is located on the right side of the top panel (if you hold the device with the screen facing you).
3 Find the Home button. It's a round button below the iPad screen.
4 Press and hold the Sleep / Wake and Home buttons. Hold them until the Apple logo appears on the screen.
5 Release the buttons when you see the Apple logo. iPad will go to reboot.
6 Wait for the iPad to restart. When you see the lock screen, proceed to the next step.
7 Turn off iPad as usual. When iPad restarts, it will respond to your actions. Now turn off the device using the "Sleep / Wake" button:
- hold the "Sleep / Wake" button until the "Turn off" option appears;
- swipe the "Disable" option to the right;
- wait for the iPad screen to go blank (black).
Tips
- If iPad is locked or won't turn off due to software issues, restore or update iPad.
Warnings
- Forcing the iPad to restart while running applications can result in the loss of unsaved changes.
