Fully discharging and recharging the nickel laptop battery can improve battery performance and extend battery life. Here are two ways to completely discharge a nickel battery.

Steps

Method 1 of 2: Discharging the Battery While Using the Computer

1. 1 Temporarily disable hibernation on your computer. This will allow your battery to drain completely.
2. 2Click the power indicator on the taskbar, or select Start> Control Panel> Performance and Maintenance> Power Options> Power Schemes
3. 3 Make a note of the current settings from the Plugged in and On Battery columns so that you can restore them later.
4. 4 In the drop-down lists of all six options in both columns, select Never.
5. 5 Click the "OK" button.
6. 6 Unplug the laptop from the external power source, but do not turn it off.
7. 7 Run the laptop on battery power until it is completely discharged. The battery indicator will flash when the battery is low. When the battery is completely discharged, the power / standby indicator turns off and the laptop turns off.

Method 2 of 2: Using the BIOS

1. 1 Before using the next method, be sure to write down all the settings from the "Plugged in" column as described above.
2. 2 You can drain the battery using the BIOS.
3. 3 Reboot your computer.
4. 4 Press the "Del" key while turning on the computer.
5. 5 Go to the BIOS menu. After pressing the "Del" key, you should automatically enter the BIOS menu. An open BIOS window will prevent your computer from shutting down or hibernating.
6. 6 Leave the laptop turned on until the power / standby light turns off.

Tips

• If you cannot enter BIOS, you can disable automatic hibernation in Windows:
• Click on the power indicator on the taskbar or enter the Power Management menu. Disable related settings.

Warnings

• Don't drain your laptop battery too often, just once a month, usually charge it to 20%.
• Not all rechargeable batteries need to be discharged depending on their type. Make sure the type of battery you are using requires discharge. If you discharge a battery that does not need to be discharged, it will shorten its life.
