A tailored jacket is the best way to look smart. However, before displaying a jacket for all to see, it must be carefully ironed to make it look presentable. This article will show you how to iron a jacket.

Steps

  1. 1 Install an ironing board. If you don't have one, use a folded towel in half; place it on a flat surface that is not afraid of heat.
  2. 2 Check the care instructions on the jacket label. The most important thing is to find out the composition of the fabric. If it is a linen jacket, the iron may be hot and you will need steam. If it is woolen or semi-woolen, a warm steam iron is what you need. If the jacket is made of synthetic fabric (e.g. polyester / nylon), use a cooler, no steam setting.
  3. 3 Make sure the soleplate is clean, otherwise dirt will fall on the fabric of your jacket. If it needs cleaning, scrub it with a brush and wipe it off with a damp cloth.
  4. 4 Apply steam if desired. If you are using steam (you will get the best results), find a small pitcher to fill the iron reservoir with water.
  5. 5 Turn on the iron, set the correct temperature. One point is cool, 2 points are warm and 3 points are hot.
  6. 6 Wait for it to heat up. If you start ironing earlier, water will seep out and stain the fabric.
  7. 7 Take your jacket and place it on the board. Try to iron the fabric on the closed inner hem first with a hot iron, and if for some reason the iron still leaks or gets dirty, it will not be visible. Adjust temperature settings as needed and continue ironing gently.
  8. 8 Start ironing the main part of the jacket. Do not move the iron, just lift it up and press lightly
    • Using light pressure, smoothly iron the back lining, but not the right side of the fabric.
    • Place a clean towel on the right side of the fabric and iron through it. This will also prevent shiny spots from appearing on the fabric if the material has some kind of special coating. Once ironed, do not return to the same place again!
    • Be careful not to over-iron the jacket, especially the hem.
    • Unfold the jacket and iron the front panel, paying particular attention to the lapel area.
    • Iron the area under the lapels so that they are not flattened.
  9. 9 Grab the sleeves (hardest part). One tip, roll up a towel or T-shirt and tuck it in your sleeve for a nice finish, you don't want arrows on the sleeves. You can also use a steam boost; just be careful that your hand is not in his way.
  10. 10 Once you're done, hang your neatly ironed and steamed jacket on a suitable hanger. Use hangers and batting hangers whenever possible, but wire hangers are better than nothing.

Tips

  • Clean the iron before use.
  • Iron from the inside out if possible.
  • Check labels.
  • Use a clean towel over the suit to protect the fabric while ironing.
  • Hang to cool after ironing.
  • Use steam to soften folds and cuffs.

Warnings

  • Check the temperature of the iron on the inside of the edge first.
  • Before steaming, check if the water is hot.
  • Do not overdo it with ironing, otherwise the fabric will become shiny.
