Regular cleaning of the window air conditioner has a positive effect on the performance of this device. Remove and flush the filter monthly while the cooling system is running. Store the air conditioner indoors with plastic wrap or tarp when not in use. Disassemble the air conditioner for full seasonal cleaning prior to installation in warm weather. Brush the aluminum fins, blow out the coils with compressed air, vacuum up the debris from the inner sump and wipe with a damp cloth. If the air conditioner is very dirty, deep clean with a coil cleaner or oxygenated household cleaner.

Steps

Method 1 of 4: Daily cleaning

1. 1 Be aware of mold marks and odors. If you smell mildew when you turn on the air conditioner for the first time, this method may be helpful.
2. 2 Pour hydrogen peroxide into an aerosol bottle. A 3% solution, which is sold in stores and pharmacies, is suitable.
   • Do not use alcohol as it is highly flammable and can cause a fire.
   • Do not use chlorine bleach, as the fumes are toxic and the product itself can damage the conditioner.
   • Hydrogen peroxide is not nearly as dangerous as bleach or alcohol, but the bottle should also have a recognizable label and be kept out of the reach of children.
3. 3 Disconnect the device. Spray hydrogen peroxide near the inlet and outlet on the front of the device.
   • Do not inhale and be careful not to get the spray in your eyes. Once it settles on surfaces, the fumes will no longer pose a threat.
   • Wash your hands thoroughly.
4. 4 Wait for the peroxide to dry. Then turn on the air conditioner again.
   • It is best to apply the spray in the evening after turning off the device so that it has time to dry in the morning.
5. 5 Perform a deeper cleaning if necessary. If this treatment is not enough, then remove the filter from the switched off air conditioner and spray peroxide on the inner surfaces of the device.
   • Place a drip tray under the air conditioner, otherwise peroxide droplets can discolor carpet, home textiles, or wood surfaces.
   • For example, you can use a kitchen baking sheet.
6. 6 You do not need to turn the air conditioner on and off often. Conditions before condensation evaporates are ideal for microbial growth.When the unit is turned on, the very high temperatures and the continuous flow of condensation (dripping from the outside) prevent germs from accumulating inside the air conditioner.

Method 2 of 4: Cleaning the Filter Monthly

1. 1 Remove the bezel to access the filter. First you need to turn off the device and unplug the power cable from the outlet. The front panel of the air conditioner is usually secured with screws or tabs. Remove the panel and locate the filter to be removed from the special cutout in the case.
   • The filter extends up or down depending on the model. For details on how to remove the bezel and filter, refer to the instruction manual.
2. 2 Rinse the filter. The filter should be rinsed with warm running water. If there is a lot of hardened dirt or dust on the surface, use a vacuum cleaner attachment.
   • It is advisable to clean the filter at least once a month. Clean more often if you have pets or live in a dusty area.
3. 3 Dry the filter and replace it. Shake off drops of water and dry with a tissue. Then the filter must dry completely. Replace the dry filter and secure the bezel.
   • Never run the air conditioner with a wet filter or without a filter.
4. 4 Replace worn out filter. If the filter is worn out or torn, it should be replaced. For a unique filter design, check the model number and order a new filter online or from the air conditioner manufacturer.
   • If you are using the generic option, buy the correct size air conditioner filter online or at a home improvement store.

Method 3 of 4: Seasonal Air Conditioner Cleaning

1. 1 Remove the air conditioner cover. Switch off the device and unplug the power cord. Remove the bezel and the plates that secure the air conditioner to the window. Locate and unscrew all the screws that hold the outer casing. Remove the cover carefully so as not to snag the inside of the air conditioner.
   • The screws are small, so it's best to fold them in an envelope or small jar.
2. 2 Brush the aluminum fins. Use a brush or a soft brush to remove dust and dirt from the aluminum fins. Inexpensive brushes for cleaning window air conditioners can be purchased online or at a home improvement store.
   • Wear work gloves before cleaning the aluminum fins to avoid cutting yourself.
3. 3 Blow out the coils and fan with compressed air. Buy a compressed air cylinder online or at a hardware store. Blow out the ribs and coils at the front and back of the air conditioner. Don't forget the fan and motor in the center of the case.
4. 4 Vacuum up the debris and rinse the pan. Use a suitable vacuum cleaner attachment to collect dirt and debris in the pan or on the bottom inside the air conditioner. Spray on the cleaning agent, wipe and wipe off the dirt with a damp cloth.
   • Wipe the pan with a clean cloth and let dry for a few hours before reassembling.
5. 5 Store the air conditioner indoors during the cold season. Do not leave the air conditioner on the window when not in use. If you live in a private home, take the device to the basement or attic. Cover with plastic wrap or tarp to keep out dust and debris.
   • If you cannot remove the air conditioner from the window, cover the outside of the unit with a tarp or special cover.

Method 4 of 4: Deep Cleaning

1. 1 Take the air conditioner outdoors and remove the cover. If you live in a private home, you can clean the air conditioner in your yard. Place the air conditioner on a table near the water hose. Remove the bezel and side plates that secure it to the window. Unscrew the screws that hold the shroud in place, put them in a safe place and carefully remove the shroud. If you live in an apartment and it is impossible to clean the air conditioner outside,

you will have to wash it in the bathroom and dry it on the balcony or loggia.

   • To clean the air conditioner outdoors, it is best to choose a warm and sunny day.
2. 2 Spray the casing and internal parts with cleaning solution. Use an air conditioner coil cleaner or oxygenated household cleaner. You can also mix warm water and a few drops of dish soap. Spray the solution onto the bezel, shroud, and all mounting plates. Then machine the inner coils, fan, aluminum fins and inner base.
   • Leave it on for 10 minutes.
3. 3 Brush parts and reapply solution if necessary. Take a soft brush and gently clean all parts that have been coated with the detergent solution. If the dirt does not give way (for example, around the fan blades), then reapply the solution and leave it on for a few more minutes. Then brush again.
4. 4 Flush the shroud, coils and sump with a hose. A low water pressure is needed so as not to damage the coils or aluminum fins. Flush the outer casing, bezel and mounting plates first, then the coils, fan, and aluminum fins. Tilt the device to rinse the inner base.
   • Be careful not to get the control panel wet when flushing from below.
5. 5 The parts must dry before assembly. Leave the air conditioner outside for a few hours to dry in the sun. You can also collect some of the moisture with a tissue to speed up the process. All parts must be completely dry before assembly.
