You have rearranged, and now the refrigerator door opens in the wrong direction, and you want to outweigh it. This is easy to change. Continue reading the steps for more information.

Steps

  1. 1 At the very top of the refrigerator, above the freezer door (you may need a ladder), remove the two star screws (using a Phillips screwdriver purchased for just a few dollars from your local hardware store) from the freezer door. They will be in the hinge plate (hinge side of the refrigerator).
  2. 2 Remove the upper hinge plate. Set the hinge plate to one side and reinstall the two star screws in the holes in the top of the refrigerator.
  3. 3 On the side of the doorknob, at the outer edge of the doorknob, you will see a small vinyl or plastic plug (at the top of the freezer door). Using a small screwdriver, carefully move around the socket and place it in the hole from which you removed the hinge plate.
  4. 4 Open the freezer door and lift the freezer door off the pivot. Leave the door aside.
  5. 5 On the bottom of the refrigerator door, on the hinge side, you will see a small bracket (the same color as the refrigerator), there will be two star screws in the front of the refrigerator frame. Remove these two screws. This could cause the refrigerator door to fall, so keep the door closed when removing this bracket.
  6. 6 Open the refrigerator door, lower and remove it, (placing it under the center of the pivot) set the door to the side and reposition the two screws in the refrigerator frame. You may need to tilt the door as you remove it from the pivot pin.
  7. 7 Using a Torx screwdriver, remove the bracket pivot pin (which was between the freezer door and the refrigerator door). Remove the bracket and insert the screws back into the holes. Hold the bracket in the position it was previously installed and set it aside.
  8. 8 On the handle on the side of the refrigerator frame in the center section, remove the two star screws from the frame, and the first screw from the outer edge, (from the frame section between the refrigerator and freezer). Turn the center bracket (which you removed) upside down, and secure it with the screws you removed.
  9. 9 On the bottom of the refrigerator door, use a small flat screwdriver to pry the pivot pin. And remove the star screw from the axis of rotation of the bracket. Place the pivot pin of the bracket, and the pivot pin back to the opposite side of the door. You may need to tilt the door.
  10. 10 On the front door of the refrigerator, on the old side of the hinge, you will see a small plastic plug. Lift it up gently and set it aside. In the same place on the handle, you will see either a plate (refrigerator brand) or another plastic plug or plate. Lift up gently (using a small screwdriver) and remove the screw underneath. On the top of the refrigerator door, remove the two Phillips screws that hold the handle. Remove the handle and replace the screws. Set the handle aside and remove the large plastic plug that was next to the handle by moving it to the opposite side. Remove the two screws from the old hinge and reposition the handle as well as the plastic plugs.
  11. 11 Remove the two screws at the bottom of the refrigeration frame by moving to the new side of the hinge. Install the refrigerator door. Attention: there may be three screws in this area, be sure to remove the two that match. You may need to tilt the refrigerator door slightly and move the top pivot.
  12. 12 Remove the Phillips screws from the top and bottom of the freezer door handle. Remove the handle and set aside.
  13. 13 Remove the door from the old freezer door hinge and set it aside where you removed the handle. Install the freezer door handle to the new side.
  14. 14 At the very top of the refrigerator, on the old side of the handle, remove the two screws. Place the freezer door on the center pivot and close the door. Reinstall the upper pivot bracket. You may need to lift or slightly adjust the door to get the screws in place.

Tips

  • Always put the screws back. Leaving these screws by themselves risks damaging the insulation.

Warnings

  • If you have a water dispenser or ice maker in your refrigerator door, then you must take extra care when installing.
  • Do not use a Phillips screwdriver like a torx screwdriver when loosening the screws.

What do you need

  • A star screwdriver or a wrench - depending on how your refrigerator is holding the door hinges.
  • crosshead screwdriver
  • Small flat screwdriver
