The fumigation ceremony is a Native American tradition that cleanses the home of bad feelings and negative vibrations. Fumigation with smoke will help create a tranquil environment in your home. Fumigation is performed by burning special dried herbs and spreading smoke throughout the house. You can place dry herbs in a bowl or use a knitted bun to fumigate your home.
Steps
Method 1 of 4: Preparing for the Fumigation Ceremony
1 Decide how you want to fumigate your home: dried herbs or a knitted bunch. When you fumigate your home, you can use a variety of herbs or just one, such as sage.
2 Find herbs to fumigate. You can grow your own herbs, or find them at the grocery store. You can purchase a knitted fumigation bun from health food stores, Native American stores, or online.
3 Prepare yourself for the fumigation ceremony by taking deep breaths and thinking positively.
Method 2 of 4: Herbal Fumigation
1 Place a small piece of charcoal in a fire retardant container.
2 Light the charcoal with a match. You can fumigate your home with herb alone or with a small dry herb mix consisting of: cedarwood, sweet herbs, lavender, wormwood, juniper, desert sage, or white sage. Place a handful of herbs on top of the charcoal.
3 The flame should ignite and the grass will burn slowly, emitting a slightly scented smoke. When you fumigate a house, you need smoke, not fire.
Method 3 of 4: Fumigation with a knitted bun
1 Light the end of the bundle with a match.
2 Let the beam burn for 30 seconds to 1 minute to make sure it does not go out. When you purge a house with fumigation, you don't want to set fire to the bundle in the middle of the ceremony.
3 Blow on the end of the bunch as if blowing out a birthday candle.
Method 4 of 4: Fumigation Ceremony
1 Go to 1 room at home with steaming herbs or knitted bun.
- When fumigating your home, start on the west side of the room, then work your way clockwise around all 4 corners of the room.
- Say something positive, such as “Please bring light, love, and laughter to this house,” while the smoke puffs up or say a familiar prayer.
2 You need to fumigate every room to clean the house this way, as well as bathrooms, wardrobes and hallways.
3 Put out the smoke with a little water after you've fumigated the whole house. Dispose of used herbs in a compost heap or household waste.
Tips
- Juniper purifies and helps to make the environment safe and sacred.
- If you like, you can only fumigate with sage.
- White sage and desert sage cleanse from harmful vibrations and evil spirits. Some people choose white sage because it smells sweeter than desert sage.
- The sweet herb attracts positive energy and is a sacred herb for fumigation.
- Lavender brings a peaceful environment and brings back balance. It also creates loving vibrations.
- Wormwood awakens prophetic dreams, and the Lakota Indians believe that it drives away evil spirits.
- Cedarwood enhances good energy and acts as a purifier.
Warnings
- Do not perform fumigation around people with respiratory problems such as asthma.
