Alder is a deciduous plant with medium density wood, often used for furniture, doors, and finishing. You can paint the wood to make it look more beautiful. Best results are obtained if a coat of primer is applied before painting to avoid stains and achieve a uniform color.
Steps
Part 1 of 3: Choosing a Paint Color
1 Alder wood is quite rare and is sold mostly without finishing. If its surface is still finished, peel it off with chemicals or sandpaper.
2 Check out paint samples from your local hardware store. Alder can be painted in almost any color, making it look like, for example, cherry or another type of wood.
3 Before starting work, test the paint on a small piece of alder wood. If you don't like the color of the first paint, peel it off with emery paper and try a different paint.
4 Purchase enough paint. Be sure to also purchase a wood stain primer and painting tools.
Part 2 of 3: Priming the alder
1 Sand the wood with 180 to 220 grit sandpaper. This will ensure that the paint is applied evenly.
2 Apply a quick dry mordant primer to the surface. Most of these primers are sold in spray cans for ease of use. Allow the primer to dry completely before applying paint.
Part 3 of 3: Painting the alder
1 Apply paint with a paint brush or rags. A rag can be used to spread the paint more evenly. Spread the paint as evenly as possible and wipe off any excess.
2 Wait for the paint to dry. After that, if you want a darker shade, apply another coat of paint.
3 Cover the dried paint with a coat of sealant according to its instructions.
4 Wipe the surface with 240-280 grit sandpaper (very fine paper) for better adhesion. Then blow off the surface or wipe with a lint-free cloth.
5 Apply another coat of sealant. Wipe the surface again with very fine sandpaper. Apply top finishing coat.
6 Dry the wood by keeping it in a room with an air temperature of at least 21 degrees Celsius (70 degrees Fahrenheit). It will take from 48 hours to several weeks.
Tips
- Alder wood can also be artificially aged before painting. This creates a characteristic texture on the surface using a hand-held angle grinder with a wire brush. Then it is better to use gel paint.
