There are many image formats. The most common among them are bmp, gif, jpg, tif, png and many others. Programmers, web designers, digital photographers, and others who use images on a computer can re-convert such graphic files from one format to another. Here's how to do it.

Steps

1. 1 Open the photo. Most computers have one of two applications built in: either Paint (PC) or Preview (Mac). Many other programs are suitable for work.
2. 2 Click "File" in the top menu. A dropdown menu should appear.
3. 3 Select "Save As" from the menu. In the pop-up screen, among other functions, you will have the opportunity to change the name of the photo.
4. 4 Click on the drop-down menu next to Format. There should be about 12 types of extensions in this list, including JPEG.
5. 5 Decide on the file format or "extension" that suits your needs.
   • Change the file name or location if desired.
6. 6 Click Save. As a result, your file should be converted and the .JPEG version will be available in the location you specified.

Tips

• The most commonly used image formats are:
  • BMP (Usually only used for background pictures or game icons, otherwise it is not recommended to use this function) BMP (bitmap) files are huge in size and will waste a lot of traffic.
  • JPG / JPEG (compressed format; widely used in almost everything that images are used) JPG / JPEG does not support transparency or animation.
  • GIF (used by coders to add animation to their sprites or something similar) Traditionally used for line art and graphics - never for photographs. GIF supports animation and transparency.
  • PNG (This is not only the best friend of encoders, but also all other programs! This format is the second largest file size after bmp, so if the program does not support it (except for the moment of creating elements, etc.), then it really weak.
• PNG supports transparency.
• PNG has the smallest file size and can be imported by most programs as well as some cell phones using it.
• GIF is often used for animation, so it would be a waste of time to convert the image to a GIF file.

Warnings

• DO NOT overwrite your original image, or you may ruin it completely!
• When converting and trying to send the file to another application, there is a very small chance that the image will be caused by a virus on your PC.
