If you decide to make a staircase yourself, it is important for you to know how to build its backbone. The stringer of the stairs will serve as its skeleton, and our article will teach you how to make it.

Steps

  1. 1 Measure the total height and length of the ladder and the individual height and length twice. Make sure the calculations are correct.
    • Overall height is the vertical distance from one rung to the next. The individual height is the vertical height of each step.
    • Total length is the horizontal distance from one step to another. Individual length - the horizontal length of each step.
  2. 2 Place a square on the edge of the 38 x 286 mm board. The board should be at least 30.48 cm longer than the planned ladder.
  3. 3 Find the height and length values you calculated on the outside of the square. These points should touch the top edge of the board.
    • The short side of the square is the height you measured. The long side corresponds to the length.
  4. 4 Trace the outer contour of the square. Slide it down to extend the length line to the bottom edge of the board.
  5. 5 Make a parallel mark to the right of the length line at a distance of the thickness of the board. It denotes the lower part of the stringer.
  6. 6 Move the square along the board to the right so that the length mark reaches the end of the first length line.
    • Align the height mark on the top edge of the board. Circle again and repeat until you have another pair in height and length.
  7. 7 Make notches for the stringer with a circular saw. Do not cut beyond the mark as this may weaken the structure. Finish with the hand saw.
  8. 8 Cut an amount equal to the thickness of the coil at the bottom of the stringer. Use it for all stringers so that they fit exactly together.
