The Chinese Baby Gender Chart, an ancient way of predicting gender, is a fun way to guess the sex of an unborn baby. To use the table, you need to know only two parameters - the lunar month and the lunar age of the mother at the time of the child's conception. There is no evidence for the accuracy of the Chinese chart for determining the sex of the unborn child, but some people swear that it is true, although most people use it for fun.

Method 1 of 2: Calculating gender

1. 1 Find out the lunar age of the mother at the time of conception. The Chinese use a lunar calendar that is different from the Gregorian calendar. For this reason, you need to calculate the age of the mother using the lunar, not the Gregorian calendar.
   • First of all, add one year, no matter how old you are now. Are you 32 now? According to the Chinese calendar, you are at least 33 years old (possibly 34). This is because the Chinese add the first nine months spent in the womb to the child's age, unlike in the West. Therefore, when a child is born, he is already 1 year old in accordance with the lunar calendar.
   • If you were born after February 22nd, add 1 to your actual age (roughly the year you spent in the womb) and you're done. If you are 17 and you were born on July 11, then you are 18 according to the lunar calendar.
   • If you were born before February 22nd, find out if it happened before or after Chinese New Year. If you were born before Chinese New Year, add an extra year to your actual age.
     
     • For example, you were born on January 7, 1990; Chinese New Year in 1990 came on January 27, meaning you were born before the New Year according to the lunar calendar. This makes you two years older according to the lunar calendar than you are according to the Gregorian calendar.

2. 2 Determine the lunar month during which the child was conceived. If you are planning on having a baby, determine the month you would like to conceive, or simply do the opposite: use the calendar and your desired gender to determine when to conceive.

3. 3 Use the chart below to find the graph where your lunar age and month of conception intersect. Start with your lunar age at the time of conception and move to the right until you find the lunar month when the child was conceived. At the intersection, you will see either G (girl) or B (boy).

Method 2 of 2: Additional Information

1. 1 Use the birth chart to try and select the desired gender of the unborn baby. Although many families use the "Chinese Method" after conceiving a child, some couples look at the pre-conception birth calendar to select a boy or girl. You will, of course, love your child regardless of gender; but it is tempting to determine the gender beforehand.
2. 2 Remember, accurate readings are based on the Chinese lunar calendar and dates at the time of conception.
   • Birth tables that do not use the lunar calendar are not accurate. Do not use tables that use the Gregorian calendar.
   • Be sure to use dates at the time of conception, especially when it comes to age. Determine how old you were at the time of conception, not how old you are now.
3. 3 Be aware that there is no scientific evidence for the Chinese Baby Gender Chart. Science cannot verify the validity of this method, so be careful when using a spreadsheet to determine or predict your child's sex. There are several scientific ways to predict the gender of your unborn baby - ultrasound, amniocentesis - but the Chinese birth chart is not one of them.
