Magikarp is one of the most iconic Pokémon in the series, and all because of its incredible weakness and uselessness. If you want to make it harder for yourself, you can try to develop Magikarp to level 100, and it does not matter that most players try to evolve him as soon as possible into a more intimidating form, Gyarados. If you play Pokémon X, Y, Alpha Sapphire, or Omega Ruby, you can further upgrade Gyarados with the Mega Stone.

Steps

Part 1 of 3: How to Evolve Magikarp

1. 1 Decide if you want to evolve it or not. Although there is no real benefit from leveling Magikarp than bringing it to evolution, there are times when this Pokemon is best left at this stage of evolution.
   • The Shining Magikarp is a very good trophy, and the Pokémon it evolves into (Shining Gyarados) is one of the most common Shining Pokémon in the game.
   • If you want, you can try to pump Magikarp up to level 100. A level 100 Magikarp would be a good trade item, as it is incredibly difficult to get hold of.
   • At level 30, Magikarp gains the Flail ability. This ability deals a lot of damage when your Pokémon is low on health, making it extremely risky. If this skill suits your playstyle, then don't upgrade Magikarp until he gets it so he can pass it on to Gyarados.
2. 2 To evolve Magikarp, he must be pumped to at least level 20. Magikarp will start trying to evolve as soon as he reaches level 20. You can prevent it from evolving by holding down the "B" button during evolution, or you can let it transform into Gyarados.

Part 2 of 3: How to easily level up Magikarp

1. 1 Send Magikarp into battle, and then immediately swap him for another Pokémon. You will have to do this quite often, since at low levels Magikarp does not have offensive abilities.If Magikarp is in at least one of the rounds, he will receive part of the experience as a result of the battle.
2. 2 Equip the Magikarpa Exp Share. This item allows the Pokémon that wears it to gain a portion of the XP even if the Pokémon has not participated in battles. The Magikarp should still be in the active party, but you won't have to change him during the battle.
3. 3 Send Magikarp to kindergarten. You can leave Magikarp in kindergarten so that he automatically gains experience. This will take some time, since Pokémon get very little experience in kindergarten, but you do not have to take part in battles and keep the Pokémon in an active group.
   • While Magikarp is in kindergarten, he will not be able to evolve, even if he is pumped above level 20. If you take him out of kindergarten and Magikarp has the required level, he will try to evolve after the very first battle.
4. 4 Feed Magikarp rare chocolates. If you have a lot of rare candies, with their help you can quickly pump Magikarp to the desired level. If you feed him a candy that will upgrade him from level 19 to level 20, he will begin to evolve.

Part 3 of 3: How to Upgrade Gyarados to Mega Gyarados

1. 1 Get and upgrade the Mega Ring (X and Y versions). To evolve Gyarados into Mega Gyarados, you first have to get the Mega Stone, which is located in the Mega Ring. To get the Mega Ring, you will have to defeat your competitor and get the Rumble Badge in the hall of Shalur City. Take the badge to the top floor of the Tower of Mastery, after which you will receive the Mage Ring.
   • After you get the Mega Ring, you will need to upgrade it by defeating your rival in the city of Keelud again. After the battle, Professor Sycamore will upgrade your ring.

2. 2 Defeat Groudon or Kiogra (Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby versions). To get the Mega Stones in the Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby versions, you first need to defeat the legendary Pokémon: Kyogra in Alpha Sapphire and Groudon in Omega Ruby.
3. 3 Find Gyaradozit. It is the Mega Stone required for the evolution of Gyarados into its mega form. The location of Gyaradozit depends on the version of the game. At the location of Gyaradozit you will see a piece of shining land.
   • X and Y versions... You can find Gyaradozit in the city of Kurivay, next to three waterfalls in the east.
   • Alpha Sapphire and and Omega Ruby... Find Chomper (Puchien) on Route 123. You can find him at the fishmongers' shop on Route 123. Scratch Chomper and you will get Garadozit.
4. 4 Put Gyaradozit on Gyarados. Do this so he can evolve into his mega form during the battle.
5. 5 During the battle, select "Mega Evolve" to transform him into Mega Gyarados. You can only have one mega evolution in one battle. If during the battle you change it to another Pokémon, Gyarados will retain its mega form. The Mega Evolution will continue until the end of the battle or until Gyarados is unconscious.
