This article guides you how to delete Facebook messages on the Facebook Messenger app and on the Facebook page.

Steps

Method 1 of 3: Use an iPhone

1. 

   Open the Facebook Messenger app. It's an app with a blue chat icon and a white lightning bolt inside.
   • If you aren't logged into Messenger, enter your phone number and select Continue and enter the password.

   Choose Home (Home page). It's a house-shaped icon in the lower left corner of the screen.
   • If you see Messenger displaying a specific conversation, you will choose Back (Back) in the upper left corner of the first screen.

   Scroll down to the conversation you want to delete. If it's an old conversation, you'll have to scroll down for a while to find it.

   Swipe conversation left. This brings up a row of choices to the right of the conversation.

   Choose Delete (Erase). It's the red button on the far right of the screen.

   Choose Delete Conversation (Delete conversation) at the top of the window that appears after you select it Delete (Erase). This will permanently delete your chats from the message history. advertisement

Method 2 of 3: Use an Android phone

1. 

   Open the Facebook Messenger app. It's an app with a blue chat icon and a white lightning bolt inside.
   • If you aren't logged into Messenger, enter your phone number and select Continue and enter the password.

   Choose Home (Home page). It's a house-shaped icon in the lower left corner of the screen.
   • If you see Messenger displaying a specific conversation, you will choose Back (Back) in the upper left corner of the first screen.

   Scroll down to the conversation you want to delete.

   Touch and hold a conversation. After about a second, a pop-up window titled "Conversation" will appear.

   Choose Delete (Delete) at the top of the "Chat" window.

   Choose Delete Conversation (Delete conversation) when displayed. This will permanently delete that conversation from Facebook's message history. advertisement

Method 3 of 3: Use a web page on a computer

1. 

   Open Facebook page. If you're logged into Facebook, you'll see your News Feed page.
   • If you aren't logged into Facebook, type in your email address (or phone number) and in the box in the top right corner of the screen and click Log In (Log in).

   Select the Messenger icon. It's a chat icon with lightning on the inside, along with other options in the top-right corner of the Facebook page.

   Choose View All in Messenger (See all in Messenger) below the Messenger message list. After clicking this option, you will be directed to the message page.

4. 

   Select the conversation you want to delete. Your chats are all in the left pane of the page.

5. 

   Place the cursor at the conversation you want to delete. You will see a small gear icon in the lower right corner of the selected conversation.

6. 

   Click the icon ⚙️. This brings up a selection list.

7. 

   Click Delete (Delete) in the middle of the selection list.

8. 

   Choose Delete (Erase). You will see this option in the "Delete Conversation" window that appears. This will permanently delete the selected conversation from the message history. advertisement

Advice

• Deleting a Facebook message does not lose the message from the recipient's account.

Warning

• Make sure you really want to delete Facebook messages before doing this as you cannot retrieve them after deleting.
