If you live in a warm, sunny area, nursery seeds and plant a date can be an interesting project. Dates can grow into plants that you can grow indoors, in the hallways, or in the garden. Simply take the seeds from the medjool date, then wash the seeds and incubate for a few months. Once the seeds have sprouted, you can plant them in a pot of soil. Water as much as possible and provide sunlight for the plant. The growth rate of the date is quite slow, so you usually have to wait up to 4 years for the tree to reach its full size, but planting is pretty easy too!

Steps

Part 1 of 3: Nursery seeds

  1. Buy some ripe medjool dates to get the seeds. Buy some ripe dates from the supermarket and cut them out to get the seeds inside. Separate the seeds and eat the flesh of the date or discard it.
    • You will notice that the date is ripe when the fruit is slightly wrinkled or has no sticky sap.

  2. Wash the seeds to remove any remaining pulp. Wash the seeds thoroughly and scrub away any remaining pulp. If you find that the pulp is clinging to the seeds, you can soak the seeds in hot water for 24 hours and scrub them clean.
  3. Soak seeds in clean water for 48 hours. Fill a cup or bowl with water and drop the dates and soak. Change the water once a day by pouring old water and refilling with new water. This will prevent mold from forming.
    • The seed soaking step is to let the seed coat absorb water and be ready for the germination process.
    • Throw away particles that are floating on the water. You should only use the seeds that sink on the bottom.

  4. Pack 2 dates in a paper towel. Sprinkle a little water to moisten the tissue, spread it flat, and place a date on each end of the towel. Fold the tissue so that it covers both seeds, then fold the tissue in half. Both seeds should be covered and separated with a tissue.
  5. Place the seeds wrapped in a paper towel in a plastic bag and seal. Open the plastic bag and place the paper towels wrapped in the date. Make sure the seeds stay in place before you close the bag.

  6. Keep the seed bag in a warm, dark place for 6-8 weeks. Dates will germinate best at temperatures between 21 and 24 degrees Celsius. Look for a warm indoor place, such as the top of the refrigerator, or use a heating pad for better temperature control.
  7. Check regularly to monitor seed germination and for mold detection. About every 2 weeks, open the plastic bag and check the seeds. Be sure to check for both mold and replace the moldy paper towel with a new, damp paper towel. After 2-4 weeks, you should see tiny root fibers growing from the seed.
  8. Plant the sprouted seeds in the pot. Continue to monitor the germination process. Once the roots have sprouted, it's time to plant the seeds!
  9. Try potting seeds if you like. Prepare a pot for each seed. Pour into pots with 1 part soil dedicated to sowing seeds and 1 part sand. Water gently to moisten the soil and place the seeds in the soil so that half of the seed is exposed. Fill the open part of the seed with sand. Cover the pot with a plastic wrap and place in an indirect sunlight with a temperature of about 20 degrees Celsius.
    • Seeds should germinate in 3-8 weeks.
    • Place the pot on a heating pad if you can't find a place that is around 20 degrees Celsius.

Part 2 of 3: Growing germinated seeds

  1. Look for a pot with lots of drainage holes on the bottom. Choose clay pots or plastic pots with lots of holes in the bottom for easy drainage. You may also need to purchase a pot bottom liner to catch the water dripping.
    • You should plant it in small pots at first, but keep in mind that you will have to repot larger pots as the plant grows.
  2. Fill the planting area 3/5 pots full. Fill the pot a little more than half the pot with soil. Use cactus or palm tree soil, usually a mixture of soil, sand, vermiculite, perlite and mud moss, to regulate humidity and drainage.
    • Do not compress the soil. The date palms must be loose and porous for good drainage.
    • You can also add vermiculite or sand to your soil in a 1: 4 or 1: 3 ratio.
  3. Place the germinated seeds 2.5 cm above the center of the soil layer. Keep the newly sprouted leaf or bud in the center of the pot, slightly above the ground. The position where the buds will grow should be about 2.5 cm below the mouth of the pot.
    • If the roots are fragile, you can plant the sprouted seeds in a paper towel to protect the seeds.
    • Plant only one seed per pot.
  4. Pour soil or sand into the rest of the pot. Keep the seeds and shoots still while potting the soil. Pour soil over the seed until the buds grow. Gently compact the soil so that the shoots can stand.
  5. Water the plants thoroughly. Plants will need a lot of water after they are planted in the ground. Water the soil until it runs through the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot. Let the soil soak in and drain excess water, then water it again until the soil is completely moist. advertisement

Part 3 of 3: Caring for a date tree

  1. Place the pot in a sunny place. Some good places for potted plants are near a sunny window or in an unshielded hallway. Date palms do best in full sun, so try to expose them to sunlight as much as possible.
  2. Water the plants whenever you feel the soil 5 cm below the dry ground. Check the soil daily by sticking your index finger into the submerged soil until the second burn. If the soil is still damp, the plant is still having enough moisture and should not be watered. If the soil is dry, water the ground so it is evenly damp.
    • Watering when plants need water is better than scheduled watering. In general, dates should be watered once a week.
  3. Repot larger as the plant grows. When the plant has grown out of the pot or the roots are poking through the drainage hole at the bottom of the pot, move the plant to a larger pot. You need to do this throughout the growth of the plant while the plant is still growing. Always water a lot before and after transferring the plant to a new pot.
    • Once the tree has reached the size of a tree, you can take the pot outdoors. Remember to place the plant in a place with maximum sunlight.
    • If necessary, you can also place the pot indoors near a sunny window, but don't forget that this will greatly affect the plant's growth.
    • If you live in a warm climate, you can plant a date tree outdoors.
  4. Plant your date palm tree in the ground if it is too large to be potted. If the climate in which you live is warm enough, you can move the plant outside and plant it in the ground. Choose a sunny location and dig a hole large enough to place the roots. Remove the plant from the pot and place it in the soil hole, then cover with soil.
    • Remember that the date can reach a height of 15 m over time. Choose a location with plenty of room for the plant to grow!
