This wikiHow teaches you about some of the useful Alexa voice commands and features you may need to use. After setting up the Echo speaker, you may be struggling with so many different possibilities and not knowing where to start. This article covers some of the Alexa capabilities that you will use every day. Besides, Alexa's wikiHow skills are also very helpful. Note: Amazon Echo does not currently support Vietnamese.

Steps

Part 1 of 3: Ask common questions

1. 

   Ask for hours. Check current time or time in another world city. You can also inquire about different dates.
   • "Alexa, what time is it in London?" (What time is London now?)
   • "Alexa, when is Easter?" (When is Easter?)

   Ask about the weather. Check weather or weather forecast for specific local / city.
   • "Alexa, what will the weather be like on Tuesday in Chicago?" (What will the weather be like on Tuesday in Chicago?)
   • "Alexa, is it going to rain?" (Is it going to rain soon?)

3. 

   Inquire about the current traffic situation. To enter home and work addresses into the Alexa app, you need to tap on the icon ☰, choose Settings (Install) then tap Traffic (Traffic). You can also inquire about traffic in a specific location.
   • To speak "Alexa, check traffic" to check the commute time you have set.
   • "Alexa, how long will it take to get to 45th Street?" (How long does it take to get to Line 45?)
   • "Alexa, what's the traffic like to Home Depot?" (How is the traffic in Home Depot?)

   Check flight status.
   • "Alexa, what's the status of American Airlines flight 4444?" (What is the status of American Airlines Flight 4444?)

   Check stock prices. Say the name or spell each letter in any stock name on the New York Stock Exchange or NASDAQ.
   • "Alexa, check Amazon stock" (Check out Amazon stock).
   • Alexa, stock price for A-M-Z-N. " (Stock price A-M-Z-N).

   Listen to definitions, use synonyms or spelling words. If you're reading or writing something, you won't have to take your eyes off the page, just ask:
   • "Alexa, what does 'flocculant' mean?" (Definition of "flocculant")
   • "Alexa, what's another word for 'big'?" (What is a synonym for "big"?)
   • "Alexa, how do you spell 'maintenance'?" (How is the word “maintenance” spelled out?)

7. 

   Do mathematics. Ask Alexa to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, square root or cubic, power or factorial. You can only do one math at a time.
   • "Alexa, what's 92 divided by 14?" (How much does 92 divide 14 by?)
   • "Alexa, what's the square root of 5?" (Calculate the square root of 5?)
   • "Alexa, what's 100 factorial?" (Calculate factorial of 100). Hint: that's a huge number.
   • Alexa probably knows other math problems, so give it a try if you are unsure. For example, she can answer a few questions about prime numbers, value of pi or e, sine, cosine, or linearity.

8. 

   Convert a unit of measure. Convert between any unit of mass, weight, distance, temperature in imperial or metric, convert currency. This ability is especially helpful when you are cooking.

   Ask questions about general knowledge. Try asking about things in life like geography, general information about celebrities or historical figures, about movies or TV shows, the nutrition facts table on food and many other facts or figures. You can also ask Alexa to look up Wikipedia and she will read a few lines in the post.
   • "Alexa, what's the population of Chicago?" (What is the population of Chicago?)

Part 2 of 3: Entertainment

1. 

   Listening to music. Listen to Spotify, Pandora, Amazon Prime Music, iHeartRadio, or SiriusXM.
   • "Alexa, play dance music on Pandora." (Play Dance music on Pandora)
   • "Alexa, play Post Malone." (Play Post Malone)
   • "Alexa, play Maggot Brain by Funkadelic on Spotify" (Play Funkadelic's Maggot Brain on Spotify)
   • Now you can listen to music on multiple devices if you have multiple Echo speakers.

2. 

   Listen to Podcasts. Alexa will play the latest episode of the podcast you requested. While you can play / pause, fast forward, or rewind, if you ask Alexa something while listening, you'll lose track of the podcast.
   • "Alexa, play Radiolab." (Phat Radiolab)

3. 

   Play out Audible audio books. As long as you're signed in to your account, the playback location will be synced between the Echo speaker and whatever device you listen to.
   • "Alexa, play Ready Player One." (Play Ready Player One)
   • "Alexa, resume my book." (Resume the audio book you listened to most recently)
   • "Alexa, go back / forward" (Rewind or fast forward 30 seconds)

4. 

   Play most Kindle books. Alexa text-to-speech can continue reading multiple Kindle books from the last time you were reading and save your stops.
   • "Alexa, play the Kindle book, Astrophysics for People in a Hurry." (Play Kindle book title: Astrophysics for People in a Hurry)
   • "Alexa, pause / resume." (Pause / resume)
   • "Alexa, set a sleep timer for 15 minutes." (Set a sleep timer for 15 minutes)

5. 

   Play music over Bluetooth. You just need to pair a certain Bluetooth enabled device (eg phone) to play any content on Alexa.
   • Once the device has been previously paired, simply say: "Alexa, enable Bluetooth" or "Alexa, connect" to pair the device again.
   • This option plays the podcast more optimally than Alexa is inherently capable, as you'll have a lot of control over playback and won't lose your listening position.

6. 

   Gaming. There are many skill games available for Alexa in the skill store. Popular options include:
   • Jeopardy! This game also has Sports (Sports) and Teen (Teen) versions. Remember to answer in question form! Say: "Alexa, play Jeopardy!"
   • Song Quiz. This is a popular game that will pair you with an opponent and ask you to identify music clips. Let's start with: "Alexa, start Song Quiz."

Part 3 of 3: Practical features

1. 

   Use timer. You can manage and pause the set to the time on the Alexa app.
   • "Alexa, set a timer for 12 minutes and 30 seconds." (Set timer for 12 minutes 30 seconds)
   • "Alexa, set an 'chicken' timer for 15 minutes." (Set the "chicken" timer for 15 minutes)
   • "Alexa, check timers." (Check timer)

2. 

   Set the alarm. You can even set an alarm with a ringtone of a specific artist, song or genre.We will manage alarms on the Alexa app.
   • "Alexa, set an alarm for 4 pm." (Set the alarm at 4pm)
   • "Alexa, set an alarm for 7 am to the Beatles on Pandora." (Set the alarm at 7am using the song Beatles on Pandora)

3. 

   Set a reminder. Alexa can remind you for a task at a specific time or after a set amount of time.
   • Reminders are also sent to the phone via the Alexa app, so you'll be sure to still be prompted even when you're away from the Echo.
   • "Alexa, remind me to take out the trash in 1 hour." (Reminds you to empty the trash in 1 hour)

   Connect with the calendar. Open the Alexa app and press the button ☰, Settings (Install and Calendar (Calendar). Follow these steps to link your account. Currently, Google, Microsoft (Outlook, Office 365 or Exchange) and Apple accounts are all supported. Now you can ask Alexa for events in your calendar or add events to your calendar.
   • "Alexa, add an event to my calendar." (Alexa will prompt you to add the date, time and event name)

5.

   Hear outstanding news of the day. Set up the news service you want to use for the day's instant news by opening the Alexa app, tapping the menu ☰, Settings and choose Flash Briefing (Featured news of the day). Alexa will read short news from these services every time you ask.

7. 

   Make calls by command or call through the Alexa app. Alexa can make outgoing calls, you just have to ask her to dial any number in the US, Mexico or Canada. If the number has been added to your contacts on the Alexa app, you can also initiate voice calls, send text messages (via the Alexa app) or use the Drop in feature if you have that set.

Advice

• Get used to speaking commands without hesitating or looking at the Echo. This is not necessary and will help you master Alexa capabilities in life. You can inquire about the weather or traffic while tying your shoelaces, listening to music while washing the dishes, or setting an alarm in bed.
• If you are a Prime member, you will have access to millions of songs through the Prime Music library, where we can find and access by asking Alexa to play any artist, song or genre. . Say: "Alexa, play rap music." (Play rap music)

• If you have trouble controlling your Alexa, reset your Alexa and try again. This may remove the task that caused the assistant to malfunction, but it also removes previous settings and you will have to reset.
